What to Get

Core vaccines for Africa travel

These are the vaccines that matter most across the continent. Country-specific details are listed below.

💉
Yellow Fever
Required for entry in 30+ countries

The most important vaccine for Africa. Many countries require proof of vaccination (ICV yellow card) at the border. One dose is valid for life. Get this first.

🏭
Malaria Prophylaxis
Required in most of sub-Saharan Africa

Not a vaccine but a prescription medication. Atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline, or mefloquine depending on destination. Start before you arrive. Don't skip this.

🧔
Hepatitis A

Transmitted through contaminated food and water. Essential for anywhere you'll be eating street food or traveling outside major hotel chains.

💧
Typhoid

Available as injection (2 years protection) or oral capsules (5 years). Essential for travelers visiting smaller towns, rural areas, or eating local food.

Meningococcal
Mandatory in meningitis belt countries

Required for entry to Saudi Arabia for Hajj/Umrah (relevant when transiting Africa). Strongly recommended for the meningitis belt: Senegal east to Ethiopia.

🐕
Rabies
Consider for longer stays

Pre-exposure vaccination recommended if spending extended time outdoors, working with animals, or visiting remote areas far from quality medical care.

😆
Hepatitis B

Transmitted through blood and bodily fluids. Recommended for all travelers who may receive medical care, tattoos, or have other potential exposures.

Routine Vaccines
Always check before travel

Make sure MMR, DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis), polio, and flu vaccines are up to date. Measles outbreaks occur in parts of Africa regularly.
