Europe travel vaccine requirements
Travel Health

Europe vaccine
requirements by country.

Europe is the easiest continent for vaccine requirements. No mandatory entry vaccines for most countries, no malaria, and generally excellent healthcare. The main things to watch are tick-borne encephalitis in forested Eastern Europe and making sure your routine vaccines are up to date.

44 countries covered
✅ Most require no mandatory vaccines
🌳 TBE flagged for forested areas
📄 Routine vaccines key
0
Mandatory entry vaccines for most of Western Europe
France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands and most EU countries require nothing at the border
0
Countries in Europe with significant malaria risk
Europe is entirely malaria-free. No prophylaxis needed anywhere on the continent.
TBE
Tick-Borne Encephalitis
The main vaccine to consider for Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, and Alpine forests
MMR
Measles outbreaks in parts of Europe
Make sure your MMR is up to date. Measles outbreaks have occurred across Romania, Ukraine, and the Balkans
What to Get

Vaccines worth knowing about for Europe

Europe has a very low vaccine burden overall. These are the vaccines that actually matter here.

🌳
Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE)
Consider for forested Eastern Europe

A viral infection spread by tick bites. Relevant for hikers and campers in forested areas of Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, Baltic states, Scandinavia, Russia, and the Balkans. Not needed for city travel.

💉
Routine Vaccines (MMR, DTP, Polio)

Measles outbreaks have occurred across Romania, Ukraine, Serbia, and other parts of Eastern Europe. MMR should be up to date. DTP and Polio boosters are also worth checking before travel.

🧔
Hepatitis A

Less critical in Western Europe but recommended for travel to Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and Turkey, where food and water hygiene standards can vary. Good insurance wherever you eat street food.

🐕
Rabies
Consider for rural Eastern Europe

Western Europe is essentially rabies-free. Some Eastern European countries (Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus) do have rabies in wildlife. Pre-exposure vaccination is worth considering for extended rural or outdoor travel.

💉
Yellow Fever (if arriving from endemic regions)
Required by some countries if from endemic origin

Europe is not endemic for yellow fever, but some European countries (particularly those with overseas territories) may require proof of yellow fever vaccination if you're arriving from sub-Saharan Africa or South America.

💧
Hepatitis B
Consider for medical procedures or long stays

Recommended for travelers who may receive medical care, tattoos, or piercings during their trip. Also recommended for longer stays across Eastern Europe and the Balkans.

💉
Typhoid
Consider for Eastern Europe & Turkey

Not routinely recommended for Western Europe. Worth considering for travel to rural Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Turkey, especially if you'll be eating local food in smaller towns.

Standard tourist travel: almost nothing needed
Good news for most travelers

For the majority of European tourist itineraries — Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Prague, Vienna — the only real requirement is ensuring your routine vaccines (MMR, DTP) are up to date before you leave home.

All 44 Countries

Country-by-country requirements

The good news: almost every European country requires no mandatory entry vaccines. The differences are in what's recommended based on your activities and the region you're visiting. Turkey is included here as it appears in the Europe section of Atlas Guide.
