Japan Requires Measles Booster for All Arrivals From July 15

Japan mandates a measles booster for all international arrivals starting July 15. Proof of vaccination within the past 10 years must be shown at immigration. Unvaccinated travellers receive on-site shots at their own cost.

Home Travel News Health Japan Requires Measles Booster for All Arrivals From July 15

Japan requires all international arrivals to present proof of a measles booster administered within the past 10 years starting July 15. Acceptable documents include vaccination certificates or blood test results. Travellers without proof receive a free booster at Narita or Haneda airports.

The rule follows a measles outbreak in Tokyo that recorded 340 cases between April and June. Children under one year and pregnant women are exempt.

Japan previously required only routine childhood vaccinations for long-term visa holders. The new policy applies to tourists and business visitors alike.

What this means for you

Check vaccination records now and obtain a booster at least two weeks before departure if needed. Carry the original certificate rather than a photocopy.

Book airport transfers with extra time on July 15-20 to account for possible health screening queues.

Similar requirements may extend to other prefectures if case numbers rise.
