Peru opens a new 120km multi-use trail inside Huascaran National Park on August 1. The Yungay to Chavin route features eight designated campsites and crosses three mountain passes above 4500 meters. Daily permits are limited to 200 hikers at $45 each.

The trail was constructed over 18 months with support from the Peruvian Ministry of Tourism. It provides an alternative to the overcrowded Inca Trail.

Huascaran already attracts 180000 visitors annually. The new path adds capacity for 60000 additional trekkers per year.

What this means for you

Reserve permits online through the official SERNANP website starting July 15 for August dates. Hire certified local guides in Yungay to meet park regulations.

Pack altitude medication and book acclimatization nights in Huaraz before starting the trek.

Park authorities plan a second trail section opening in 2027.
