New Zealand opens an 85-kilometer extension to the famous Milford Track on August 12. The new route starts at Glade Wharf and ends at Lake Te Anau allowing hikers to complete a full loop. Daily permits are limited to 120 independent walkers.
The extension adds three new huts with 40 bunks each and solar-powered lighting. Construction finished two weeks ahead of schedule after weather delays in May. The Department of Conservation spent 18 million dollars on the project.
The original 53-kilometer Milford Track has operated under a booking system since 1985. Annual visitors reached 18000 last season. The extension is expected to increase total track usage by 35 percent in the first year.
What this means for you
Reserve permits immediately through the Department of Conservation website as August slots are already 60 percent full. Pack lightweight rain gear as the new section crosses three alpine passes. Book shuttle transfers from Te Anau at least 10 days in advance.
Guided tour operators offer packages that include the extension starting at 1850 dollars for five days. Independent hikers must carry their own food and sleeping bags at the new huts.
Park rangers will monitor trail conditions daily and may close sections after heavy rain.
