New Zealand's Department of Conservation opened the final 85km Queenstown to Wanaka segment of the Te Araroa Trail on July 1. The route crosses the Richardson Mountains at 1640 metres and includes three new suspension bridges. Construction took 18 months and cost 4.2 million New Zealand dollars.

The extension eliminates a 42km road walk that previously broke the continuous trail. Official estimates project 12000 additional thru-hikers will complete the full 3000km journey in the 2026-27 season. The trail now passes 12 new eco-toilets and four upgraded huts with solar power.

Te Araroa has grown steadily since its 2011 opening with annual completions rising from 300 to 4800. The South Island section attracts 65 percent of all trail users. Tourism New Zealand markets the trail as a signature long-distance hiking experience.

What this means for you

Reserve hut beds six months ahead for peak December to March season as capacity is limited. Carry lightweight rain gear as the new alpine section receives frequent snow even in summer. Download offline maps from the Te Araroa app before entering remote stretches.

Plan resupply stops in Queenstown and Wanaka where gear shops offer hiker discounts. Southbound hikers should start in October to avoid winter closures on the new section.

Guided group options start at 8900 dollars for the full trail including logistics. Independent hikers must register free permits online before beginning any segment.
