Brazil's Ministry of Health introduced a mandatory Hepatitis A vaccination rule for all foreign visitors effective August 1 2026. Travellers must present either a vaccination certificate or proof of immunity via blood test at entry points. The single-dose vaccine must have been administered at least 14 days before arrival.

Children under one year and individuals with medical exemptions receive waivers upon presentation of documentation. The policy follows a 47 percent rise in cases concentrated in Rio de Janeiro and Bahia states. Free vaccination clinics operate at all major airports for last-minute compliance.

Brazil previously recommended the vaccine only for long-stay visitors. Neighbouring countries Argentina and Chile adopted similar requirements in 2025. The World Health Organization supports the measure given Brazil's ongoing outbreak.

What this means for you

Obtain the vaccine at least two weeks before travel and keep the certificate with your passport. Many pharmacies in the US and Europe offer the shot for 80 to 120 dollars without appointment. Confirm with your airline whether they will check certificates during check-in.

Travellers already vaccinated within the last 20 years do not need a booster. Carry a doctor's letter if you have a medical exemption to speed immigration processing.

The requirement will be reviewed in January 2027 based on case trends. Cruise passengers disembarking in Brazilian ports must also comply.
