India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare announced that all visa applicants from the United States European Union United Kingdom Australia Canada and New Zealand must upload valid Hepatitis A vaccination certificates through the e-Visa system from August 1 2026. The requirement applies to tourist business and medical visas. Unvaccinated travelers must receive the shot at least 14 days before arrival.
Health officials recorded a 47 percent increase in Hepatitis A cases among foreign nationals in 2025 compared with pre-pandemic levels. The vaccine provides lifelong immunity after two doses and is widely available in home countries.
Background indicates India previously recommended but did not mandate the vaccine for travelers. Rising street-food tourism and longer rural stays prompted the policy shift.
What this means for you
Obtain the vaccine series at least two weeks before travel and upload the certificate during e-Visa application. Keep a digital and printed copy of the certificate for airport health checks.
Choose established restaurants over street vendors during the first 10 days after arrival when immunity is still building. Carry oral rehydration salts as standard precaution.
The rule is expected to remain in place through at least 2028 based on current epidemiological data.
