Brazil's environmental agency ICMBio opened the 1.8 km suspended canopy walkway in Tapajos National Forest on June 20 2026. The steel and cable structure reaches 35 meters above the forest floor and connects five observation platforms. Daily capacity is limited to 240 visitors on guided tours only.

Construction took 18 months and cost 4.2 million reais funded jointly by federal tourism grants and private conservation partners. The walkway aims to generate sustainable income for local communities while limiting ground-level trail erosion.

Background shows previous Amazon canopy projects were concentrated in the western states of Amazonas and Acre leaving Para without comparable infrastructure despite high visitor numbers to Alter do Chao.

What this means for you

Reserve guided tours online through the ICMBio portal at least 30 days ahead as slots fill quickly. Combine with riverboat stays in Alter do Chao for two-night packages priced from 890 reais.

Wear closed shoes and bring insect repellent rated for 12-hour protection. Morning tours at 07:00 offer cooler temperatures and higher wildlife activity than afternoon slots.

Future expansions may add zip-line segments by late 2027 increasing adventure options.
