US Customs and Border Protection announced that Canadian-registered vehicles may now remain in the United States for up to 90 days without additional temporary import permits. The policy applies at all land ports from Maine to Washington state starting July 1 2026. Only proof of registration and insurance remains mandatory.

Previously travelers had to complete CBP Form 7501 for stays beyond 30 days creating long queues at busy crossings such as Detroit-Windsor and Buffalo. The streamlined process aligns with post-pandemic recovery of leisure driving traffic.

Background shows the original 30-day rule dated to 2019 trade enforcement measures that have since been deemed unnecessary given improved data sharing with Canadian authorities.

What this means for you

Plan extended road trips through New England and the Pacific Northwest without mid-journey paperwork stops. Carry only vehicle registration insurance card and passport for all occupants.

Book accommodations in advance for popular border towns like Bar Harbor and Banff-adjacent US parks to avoid summer crowds. Avoid commercial goods transport which still requires separate declarations.

The change supports multi-week itineraries combining US national parks with Canadian Rockies extensions.
