Home Travel News Safety Spain Raises Travel Advisory to Level 3 for Canary Island...

Spain raises its travel advisory to Level 3 for Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura effective July 10 because of sustained airport protests. Demonstrators have blocked terminal access on 12 occasions since July 1. Authorities recommend allowing extra time for check-in procedures.

Protests focus on housing shortages and water restrictions linked to tourism growth. Local police increased presence at all four major airports.

The advisory replaces the previous Level 2 rating issued in June. Similar demonstrations occurred in Mallorca during 2025.

What this means for you

Arrive at Canary Islands airports at least three hours before departure and monitor airline apps for real-time gate changes. Consider hotels in quieter northern areas of Tenerife to reduce exposure to protest zones.

Rebook flexible tickets if your itinerary includes layovers in Tenerife South Airport between July 15 and August 15.

Protests are scheduled to continue until September 1 according to organizers.
