Fiji vs Vanuatu

Verdict: Fiji for resorts, families and easy flights; Vanuatu for an active volcano, jungle blue holes and living kastom culture. Fiji Airways flies between Nadi and Port Vila.

Updated November 2026

Both are South Pacific island nations with kava circles, warm welcomes and a May to October dry season, and both hold a Level 1 US advisory. Fiji is the Pacific's easy resort hub, with more than 330 islands and ferries from Nadi. Vanuatu is 83 volcanic islands where Mount Yasur erupts almost nonstop and chiefs still uphold kastom.

The short answer

There's no single overall winner. Fiji wins on resorts and families, getting there and around, and safety. Vanuatu wins on volcanoes and adventure, and narrowly on culture. Cost, beaches, diving, food and weather are tied or split. Can't choose? Combine them.

The easy Pacific against the wild one

Fiji and Vanuatu are both South Pacific island nations with kava, warm welcomes and a May to October dry season. They are different trips: Fiji is the resort hub, Vanuatu the volcano-and-kastom adventure.

🇫🇯 Fiji

More than 330 islands and a very easy landing

Fiji is an archipelago of more than 330 islands, only around a third inhabited. Most visitors see Viti Levu (Nadi and the capital Suva) and the Mamanuca and Yasawa chains just offshore. The resort infrastructure, from backpacker dorms to luxury, is excellent for a country of under a million people, and "bula" greets you everywhere. The catches are transfer time and money between islands, cyclone season from November to April, and mandatory meal packages at outer-island resorts.

🇻🇺 Vanuatu

83 volcanic islands that still run on kastom

Vanuatu is a Y-shaped chain of 83 volcanic islands about 1,750 km east of Australia, with around 330,000 people speaking over 100 local languages. Efate has Port Vila and easy lagoons, Tanna has Mount Yasur, and Espiritu Santo has the beaches, blue holes and the SS President Coolidge. The catches are fewer flights, irregular domestic schedules since Air Vanuatu's 2024 liquidation, basic infrastructure outside Efate and Santo, and the natural hazards of the Ring of Fire.

Round 1 of 10

Which has better beaches, Fiji or Vanuatu?

A split decision

It depends on the kind of beach day you want. Fiji's Mamanuca lagoons are the easy, reliable postcard, 30 to 60 minutes by boat from Nadi. Vanuatu's best sand, on Espiritu Santo, takes a domestic flight and a little more effort.

Easiest lagoons

Fiji: clear lagoons close to Nadi

The Mamanucas are a compact cluster of coral and volcanic islets 30 minutes to an hour off Nadi by boat, with easy, reliable snorkelling and family resorts. Further out, the Yasawas have sheer volcanic cliffs and beaches that empty out fast once you are a few islands north. On the mainland, Natadola Beach is generally considered the best swimming beach, at the western end of the Coral Coast. Water temperature stays a swimmable 24-28°C all year.

Vanuatu: Santo's white sand and blue holes

Espiritu Santo has some of the most beautiful beaches in the Pacific, including Champagne Beach and Port Olry, plus spring-fed blue holes such as Matevulu, Nanda and Riri for swimming and rope swings. On Efate, Hideaway Island has a marine sanctuary for snorkelling. Most beaches, waterfalls and blue holes sit on customary land, so expect a small kastom fee, usually VT 500-2,500.

Round 2 of 10

Which is cheaper, Fiji or Vanuatu?

A genuine tie

On the guides' numbers, neither is clearly cheaper. Budget days are close (FJ$100-220 in Fiji, VT 9,000-12,000 or about $75-100 in Vanuatu), and each country has a different trap: Fiji's bundled outer-island meal plans, Vanuatu's pricey domestic flights.

Prices are each country's own currency, from Atlas Guide research in August to October 2026, and drift over time. Treat them as a planning baseline, not a quote.

🇫🇯 FijiWatch the meal plans

Fiji: cheap on the mainland, dearer on remote islands

Fiji spans a wider price range than most destinations its size. Nadi and hostel-based island-hopping can be genuinely affordable, with curry houses at FJ$8-15 a plate, while remote outer-island resorts that require a meal package climb fast. The main trap is underestimating inter-island transport and bundled meals, not daily spending on the mainland. Wet-season rates, especially January and February, are the cheapest of the year.

🇻🇺 VanuatuWatch the flights

Vanuatu: moderately expensive, as much is imported

Vanuatu is moderately expensive because so much is imported, and one-way flights to Tanna or Santo cost VT 15,000-25,000 each. Guesthouses, village bungalows, market meals at VT 500-800 and minibuses at VT 150-200 keep a budget trip near VT 9,000-12,000 a day. Cash matters: outer islands, markets and kastom fees are cash only, and ATMs are scarce outside Port Vila and Luganville.

The honest read: the two budget ranges overlap, so the deciding factor is your route. A Fiji trip built around Nadi and one island group avoids the expensive extras; a Vanuatu trip that adds Tanna and Santo adds two domestic flights.

Round 3 of 10

Volcanoes, jungle and adventure: Fiji or Vanuatu?

Vanuatu wins, clearly

Vanuatu is the adventure destination. You can stand at the rim of an active volcano, swim in jungle blue holes and watch the Nagol land dive. Fiji's strengths are gentler: island scenery, Taveuni's rainforest and a cultural mix.

Runner-up

Fiji: island scenery and a bit of wildness

The Yasawas run northwest of the Mamanucas with volcanic cliffs and blue lagoons, and manta rays appear roughly June to September around Naviti Island. Taveuni, the Garden Island, has rainforest and the Tavoro Waterfalls in Bouma National Heritage Park, reached on an easy marked trail. Near Nadi, the Sabeto mud pool and Garden of the Sleeping Giant make easy day outings.

Vanuatu: the volcano, the blue holes, the land dive

Mount Yasur on Tanna has been erupting almost continuously for centuries. Tours drive up at dusk and walk the last stretch to the rim, when the alert level allows; at higher alert levels access is restricted or closed. Espiritu Santo adds blue holes and the Millennium Cave jungle trek, and on south Pentecost, from roughly April to June, men leap from wooden towers up to 30 metres high in the Nagol land dive. Yasur entry plus transport is about VT 10,000 or more.

Round 4 of 10

Diving and snorkelling: Fiji or Vanuatu?

A split decision

Two different kinds of dive trip. Fiji offers sharks, soft coral and big reefs. Vanuatu offers one of the world's most famous wreck dives, the SS President Coolidge, and wartime relics.

Best for sharks and reef

Fiji: sharks, soft coral and reef

Beqa Lagoon near Pacific Harbour is one of the world's premier shark diving spots, with resident bull, tiger, lemon and reef sharks year-round, and a single day trip can bring up to eight species. Rainbow Reef, in the Somosomo Strait off Taveuni, is internationally rated for soft coral. The Great Astrolabe Reef off Kadavu is one of the world's largest barrier reefs and largely undived compared with the Mamanucas. The nearest hyperbaric chamber is in Suva.

The SS President Coolidge, a 200-metre luxury liner turned troopship that sank off Espiritu Santo in 1942 after hitting a friendly mine, lies in 20-70 metres of water and is one of the world's best and most accessible wreck dives. A two-tank dive costs about VT 15,000-20,000. Million Dollar Point is where the US military dumped equipment into the sea after the war, and Hideaway Island on Efate has a marine sanctuary and an underwater post office for snorkellers.

Sharks or shipwrecks? That is the whole decision. Both countries have good snorkelling off the main islands.

Round 5 of 10

Culture and traditions: Fiji or Vanuatu?

Vanuatu wins, narrowly

Both are warm and kava-centred; Vanuatu is the more distinctive. Around 330,000 ni-Vanuatu speak over 100 local languages and still live by kastom. Fiji blends indigenous iTaukei villages with a large Indo-Fijian community, which also shapes its food.

🇫🇯 FijiRunner-up

Fiji: kava, sevusevu and a two-community mix

Fijian hospitality runs on kava, called yaqona, and on the sevusevu protocol of presenting kava root to a village headman before entering. About 87 percent of land is held communally by indigenous clans, which is why village protocol is genuine rather than staged. Indo-Fijians, descended from indentured labourers brought over between 1879 and 1916, run much of the commercial scene, and the Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple in Nadi is the largest Hindu temple in the Southern Hemisphere. Levuka, on Ovalau, is a UNESCO World Heritage port town.

🇻🇺 VanuatuWinner

Vanuatu: kastom still runs daily life

Land is almost all owned by customary groups, and chiefs and kastom shape daily life. Pentecost's Nagol land dive is the ancestor of bungee jumping, and on Tanna the John Frum movement raises the US flag at Sulphur Bay every 15 February. Sand drawing is on UNESCO's list of intangible heritage, and Ambrym has the masked Rom dance. Ceremonies often charge photography and filming fees, set by the community.

Respect the protocol: in both countries dress modestly in villages, ask before photographing and pay or present what is expected (sevusevu in Fiji, kastom fees in Vanuatu).

Round 6 of 10

Which has better food, Fiji or Vanuatu?

A genuine tie

Different strengths, no clear winner. Fiji has two food cultures, indigenous Fijian and Indo-Fijian curry. Vanuatu has earth-oven lap lap, grass-fed Santo beef and a French-influenced restaurant scene in Port Vila.

🇫🇯 FijiBest for variety

Fiji: kokoda, lovo and curry houses

Kokoda, raw white fish marinated in lime and coconut cream, is served in a coconut shell for FJ$15-25. Lovo is a feast cooked in an underground earth oven, usually at a resort night with a meke dance, and rourou is taro leaves stewed in coconut milk. Alongside that, Nadi's Indo-Fijian curry houses serve curry and roti for FJ$8-15. Fijian bananas and pineapple are sold cheaply everywhere.

🇻🇺 VanuatuBest for local produce

Vanuatu: lap lap, Santo beef and market plates

Lap lap, grated yam, taro or banana with coconut cream baked in an earth oven, is the national dish at VT 300-800. Santo beef, grass-fed and raised under coconut palms, is served as steaks for VT 2,500-4,500, and fresh seafood runs VT 1,500-4,000. Port Vila's Mama's Market serves big plates of rice, lap lap, fish or beef stew for VT 500-800, the cheapest good meal in town.

One shared rule: skip the sidewalk kava offers in Nadi town (the real thing happens in villages) and avoid coconut crab in Vanuatu, which is overharvested.

Round 7 of 10

Resorts, families and honeymoons

Fiji wins, clearly

Fiji has the bigger, easier resort scene. It has kids' clubs, calm lagoons, Denarau's international brands and everything from FJ$40 dorms to FJ$1,200 villas. Vanuatu is smaller and more intimate, with less choice at the budget end.

Winner

Fiji: a resort for every budget

Tourism is Fiji's largest industry, and most mid-range and luxury resorts on Denarau, in the Mamanucas and on the Coral Coast run supervised kids' clubs, typically for ages 3 to 12. The flight from Australia or New Zealand is around 3 hours, with no jet lag from New Zealand. Mid-range island resorts run FJ$200-400 a night and Denarau luxury FJ$500-1,200+. Always check what the room rate includes at outer-island resorts.

Vanuatu: smaller and more intimate

Efate's lagoon resorts are the easiest base with young children, and families like the calm lagoons, waterfalls and snorkelling at Hideaway Island. Resorts range from Iririki Island Resort in Port Vila harbour to the adults-only Havannah on Efate's northwest coast, at VT 35,000-80,000 a night. Outside Efate and Santo, accommodation is simple and infrastructure basic, and malaria is present on many islands outside Port Vila, so families should weigh outer-island trips carefully.

Round 8 of 10

When to go: the best time for Fiji and Vanuatu

A genuine tie

The seasons line up almost exactly. Both have a dry season from May to October and a wet, cyclone-prone season from November to April, with the real cyclone risk from January to March. Plan one trip and both work.

🇫🇯 FijiBest: Jun-Sep

Fiji: June to September is the sweet spot

May through October is the dry season, with June to September the most reliable stretch: lower humidity, minimal rainfall and no cyclone risk. Prices and crowds peak then. November to April is wet with rising cyclone risk, peaking January to March, but most trips in these months go unaffected and accommodation is markedly cheaper. Nadi averages 25°C; Taveuni is the wettest region.

🇻🇺 VanuatuBest: May-Oct

Vanuatu: May to October, with Nagol until June

May to October is cooler, less humid, sunny and outside cyclone season, with good diving visibility. July and August are peak, with Australian school holidays, so book ahead. December to March is hot, humid and cyclone season, with the lowest prices; severe cyclones struck in 2015 and 2023. The Nagol land dive takes place from roughly April to June.

The tiebreaker: if the Pentecost land dive matters, aim for late April to June. For the manta season in Fiji's Yasawas, aim for roughly June to September.

Round 9 of 10

Getting there and getting around

Fiji wins, clearly

Fiji is far easier to reach and move around. Nadi is a major hub with direct flights from Australia, New Zealand, the US West Coast and, increasingly, Asia. Vanuatu has fewer routes, and its domestic flights can be irregular.

🇫🇯 FijiWinner

Fiji: a Pacific hub with simple ferries

Nadi International Airport (NAN) is about 3 hours from Sydney or Auckland. Denarau is 20 minutes from the airport, the Coral Coast 2-2.5 hours by road and Suva 3-4 hours. South Sea Cruises catamarans reach the Mamanucas in under an hour, and the Yasawa Flyer leaves Port Denarau at 8:30am and takes up to 4.5 hours to the furthest resorts. Express buses from Nadi to Suva cost about FJ$20, and rental cars FJ$75-100 a day, driving on the left.

🇻🇺 VanuatuRunner-up

Vanuatu: fewer flights, build in buffer days

Bauerfield International (VLI) in Port Vila has direct flights from Brisbane, Sydney, Auckland, Christchurch, Nadi and Nouméa, though schedules have changed often since Air Vanuatu stopped international flying in 2024. Domestic flights to Tanna (about 40 minutes) and Santo (about 50) cost VT 15,000-25,000 one way and can be rescheduled, so avoid flying out to an outer island on the day of your international departure. Port Vila minibuses cost VT 150-200, and Efate car rental VT 7,000-12,000 a day, driving on the right.

Combining both: Fiji Airways flies Nadi to Port Vila, which is why the two pair so well in one trip.

Round 10 of 10

Is Fiji or Vanuatu safer for tourists?

Fiji wins, narrowly

Both are Level 1, "Exercise Normal Precautions", with the US State Department. Violent crime against tourists is low in both. The difference is the risk list: Fiji's is mostly petty theft; Vanuatu's adds earthquakes, volcanoes, malaria on outer islands and basic medical care.

🇫🇯 FijiWinner

Fiji: watch your bag, not your back

Violent crime against tourists is uncommon. Robbery, burglary and pickpocketing are concentrated in tourist areas, and the State Department names Colo-i-Suva Forest Park near Suva for bag and phone snatching. It has also noted an increase in reported sexual assaults against female tourists, so avoid walking alone late at night in Nadi or Suva and use pre-booked transport after dark. Emergency numbers: police 917, ambulance 911, fire 910.

🇻🇺 VanuatuRunner-up

Vanuatu: friendly, but nature is the risk

Crime against tourists is low, though petty theft occurs in Port Vila and Luganville. The bigger risks are natural: a magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck near Port Vila in December 2024, and Vanuatu lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire and in the cyclone belt. Malaria is present on many islands outside Port Vila, dengue occurs and medical care is basic, with serious cases evacuated to Australia or New Zealand, so insurance with evacuation cover is essential. Emergency numbers: police 111, ambulance 112, fire 113.

Fiji's cyclone season (November to April) and Vanuatu's apply equally, so check forecasts for either in the wet months.

Which is better for couples, families and adventurers?

Fiji for families, first-timers, backpackers and resort stays. Vanuatu for adventure, culture and fewer visitors. Couples and divers can go either way.

Families with young children

Fiji

Kids' clubs, calm lagoons and a 3-hour flight from Australia or New Zealand make logistics simple. Vanuatu has malaria on many outer islands.

Couples & honeymoons

Either

Fiji offers easy luxury resorts; Vanuatu offers a volcano at dusk and a kava evening.

Adventure seekers

Vanuatu

Mount Yasur, the Millennium Cave trek, blue holes and the Nagol land dive have no equivalent in Fiji.

First-timers to the Pacific

Fiji

More flights, an English-speaking infrastructure and ferries that run daily from Port Denarau.

Backpackers

Fiji

The Yasawas have the widest budget range in Fiji, from dorms to small resorts, and a strong backpacker network.

Culture and history lovers

Vanuatu

Kastom villages, sand drawing, the John Frum movement and wartime relics on Santo.

Divers

Either

Beqa Lagoon sharks and Rainbow Reef in Fiji; the President Coolidge wreck in Vanuatu.

Luxury seekers

Fiji

Denarau and outer-island resorts at FJ$500-1,200+ a night, with far more choice than Vanuatu.

Can you combine Fiji and Vanuatu in one trip?

Yes. Fiji Airways flies Nadi to Port Vila, and the Vanuatu guide calls a Fiji-Vanuatu combination "an excellent two-week Pacific trip". Check current routes before booking, as Vanuatu's schedules have changed often.

Fiji: days 1 to 7

  1. Days 1-2

Nadi. Settle in, visit the Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple, the Sabeto mud pool and the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, and eat at a curry house.

  2. Days 3-6

Mamanuca Islands. A South Sea Cruises ferry to a resort island for four nights of snorkelling and at least one lovo night.

  3. Day 7

Back to Nadi. A morning ferry, last-minute market shopping, then the flight to Port Vila.

Vanuatu: days 8 to 14

  1. Days 8-10

Efate. Port Vila's market and museum, Mele Cascades, Hideaway Island and the Blue Lagoon.

  2. Days 11-12

Tanna. Fly south for Mount Yasur at dusk, a kastom village and Port Resolution.

  3. Days 13-14

Efate. The ring road, Havannah Harbour and a kava evening before flying home.

When to go: May to October suits both. Keep a spare day around each domestic flight in Vanuatu, and do not schedule an outer-island flight on the day of your international departure.

Verdict: Fiji or Vanuatu?

There is no single winner. Fiji is the easier, resort-friendly trip and wins resorts, access and safety. Vanuatu is the adventure, with the volcano and kastom culture. Cost, beaches, diving, food and weather are even or split.

Choose Fiji if…

Fiji, for ease and resorts

The right choice for a relaxed island holiday with strong infrastructure, great for families and first-timers.

  • You want an easy resort trip with kids' clubs and short transfers
  • Flights matter: Nadi is the bigger hub
  • You want the Mamanucas or Yasawas for island-hopping
  • Sharks at Beqa Lagoon or Rainbow Reef appeal
  • You want the widest range of budgets, from dorms to luxury
  • A 4-month visa-free stay is useful

Choose Vanuatu if…

Vanuatu, for adventure and kastom

The right choice for travellers who want volcanoes, jungle and living tradition over resort polish.

  • An active volcano is on your list: Mount Yasur
  • Blue holes, jungle and the Millennium Cave appeal
  • You want kastom villages and the Nagol land dive (April to June)
  • The SS President Coolidge wreck dive is the draw
  • You prefer smaller and less developed
  • You are happy to plan around domestic flights

Fiji vs Vanuatu: frequently asked questions

Which is better, Fiji or Vanuatu?

Neither wins outright. Choose Fiji for resorts, families, easy flights and island-hopping by ferry. Choose Vanuatu for an active volcano, jungle blue holes, kastom culture and a less developed feel.

Is Fiji or Vanuatu cheaper?

Neither is clearly cheaper. Budget travellers manage on FJ$100-220 a day in Fiji and VT 9,000-12,000 (about $75-100) in Vanuatu. Fiji's trap is mandatory meal plans at outer-island resorts (FJ$150-250 per person per day); Vanuatu's is domestic flights at VT 15,000-25,000 one way.

Which has better beaches, Fiji or Vanuatu?

It depends. Fiji's Mamanuca lagoons are the easiest, 30 to 60 minutes by boat from Nadi, and Natadola is the best mainland beach. Vanuatu's Champagne Beach and Port Olry on Espiritu Santo are among the most beautiful in the Pacific, with blue holes nearby.

Is Fiji or Vanuatu better for families?

Fiji. Resorts on Denarau, in the Mamanucas and on the Coral Coast run kids' clubs, and the flight from Australia or New Zealand is about 3 hours. Vanuatu's Efate resorts suit families too, but malaria is present on many islands outside Port Vila.

When is the best time to visit Fiji and Vanuatu?

May to October for both, the dry season. In Fiji June to September is the most reliable stretch; in Vanuatu July and August are peak. Both have cyclone season from November to April, with the real risk from January to March. The Nagol land dive in Vanuatu runs roughly April to June.

Which is better for diving, Fiji or Vanuatu?

Fiji for sharks and coral: Beqa Lagoon has bull, tiger, lemon and reef sharks year-round, and Rainbow Reef is rated for soft coral. Vanuatu for the SS President Coolidge, a 200-metre liner sunk in 1942 and lying in 20-70 metres of water, one of the world's best wreck dives.

Can you combine Fiji and Vanuatu in one trip?

Yes. Fiji Airways flies Nadi to Port Vila. A two-week split of about a week in each, for example the Mamanucas then Efate and Tanna, works well. Check current Vanuatu routes before booking.

Do I need a visa for Fiji or Vanuatu?

Not for US, UK, Australian, Canadian or New Zealand passports. Fiji gives a free entry permit of up to 4 months. Vanuatu gives a free 30-day permit, extendable to 120 days within a year. Both want a passport valid for at least six months, an onward ticket and proof of funds.

There's no wrong answer here

Fiji and Vanuatu are compared so often because both are warm, beautiful and kava-loving, not because one is secretly worse. Pick Fiji for an easy island holiday, Vanuatu for the volcano and the kastom, or give each a week. Either way, go between May and October.
