What you're really choosing between
Phuket and Koh Samui are Thailand's two best-known beach islands, on opposite coasts with opposite weather. One is the big, busy, varied island; the other is smaller, calmer and more upmarket.
Thailand's biggest island contains multitudes
Phuket is not one destination but several sharing an island: loud Patong, family-friendly Kata and Karon, upmarket Surin and Bang Tao, quiet Nai Harn and a Sino-Portuguese Old Town most visitors never find. It is also the most commercially assertive island, and the jet ski, tuk-tuk and gem shop scams are real.

- Beaches, Bangla Road, Phi Phi
Phuket's quieter, more grown-up neighbour
Koh Samui is smaller, less frenetic and skews slightly older and more upmarket, with one of the densest luxury villa scenes in Southeast Asia. It sits in the Gulf of Thailand, 45 minutes from Ang Thong Marine Park and a short boat from Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, and its monsoon calendar is the mirror of Phuket's.

Round 1 of 9
Beaches
Different strengths
Phuket has the wider choice, from a quiet southern bay to a party strip; Koh Samui has a calmer, simpler ring of beaches. Different strengths, not a clear winner.
🏝️ PhuketA beach for every mood, on the Andaman Sea
Phuket's beaches run down the west coast. The north is calmer and more upmarket, the centre most developed, and the south the most beautiful and least crowded. Nai Harn, a curved white-sand bay backed by a freshwater lake, is the most beautiful beach on the island; Karon is the best value for money; Patong is the loud one. Kata and Karon are the guide's pick for a first visit.
- Don't miss
- Nai Harn, Kata Noi, Surin
🥥 Koh SamuiLong, calm and simpler, on the Gulf of Thailand
Koh Samui's beaches ring the island, with the busiest on the east coast and the quietest on the north and west. Maenam is the most relaxed and best value, with local restaurants instead of beach clubs. Chaweng is the convenient, busy one, and the Secret Beach (Ban Tai) on the west coast is the single most beautiful spot on the island. In the dry season the water is calm, clear and 28-30°C.
- Don't miss
- Maenam, Secret Beach, Bophut
Round 2 of 9
Culture and sights
Phuket wins, narrowly
Phuket has a heritage Old Town and a giant hilltop Buddha; Koh Samui has a golden Buddha and a lakeside temple. Phuket has the deeper culture, narrowly.
🏝️ PhuketSino-Portuguese Old Town and a 45-metre Buddha
Phuket Old Town has some of the finest Sino-Portuguese architecture in Thailand: pastel shophouses, ornate clan houses, Chinese shrines and the best street art in southern Thailand, free to wander. The Sunday Walking Street on Thalang Road is the best time to go. The free 45-metre white marble Big Buddha on Nakkerd Hill has the island's best sunset view, with a dress code and sarongs at the entrance.
- Don't miss
- Old Town, Thalang Road, Big Buddha
🥥 Koh SamuiA golden Big Buddha and a lakeside temple
Koh Samui's sights are fewer and easily combined on a scooter. The 12-metre gold Big Buddha (Phra Yai) sits on a tiny island linked to the north coast by a causeway, and next door Wat Plai Laem is a colourful temple complex in a lake with an 18-armed Guanyin statue. Both are free, and shoulders and knees must be covered. Bophut's Fisherman's Village adds a Friday Walking Street, and the Na Muang waterfalls are free.
- Don't miss
- Big Buddha, Wat Plai Laem, Bophut
Round 3 of 9
Food and drink
Different strengths
Hokkien noodles and Old Town coffee shops against coconut curries and grilled seafood. Both islands eat well, in different ways.
🏝️ PhuketHokkien Chinese cooking and an Old Town market
Phuket's own cuisine comes from its Chinese immigrant history: mee Hokkien noodles (60-100 THB), o tao oyster omelette (80-120 THB) and khanom jeen at the morning market (40-70 THB). At the Rawai Seafood Market you pick your seafood, with rock lobster at 500-1,500 THB per kilo, and a nearby restaurant cooks it. Thalang Road in Old Town closes for the Sunday Walking Street.
- Must try
- Mee Hokkien, o tao, Rawai seafood
🥥 Koh SamuiCoconut everything, and crab curry
Koh Samui was Thailand's largest coconut exporter for over a century, and coconut runs through the cooking. Coconut crab curry costs 350-600 THB, grilled fresh seafood 200-800 THB, roti mataba 40-80 THB and coconut ice cream in a young coconut 50-80 THB. The best street eating is the Friday Walking Street in Bophut's Fisherman's Village, with items at 30-150 THB.
- Must try
- Crab curry, grilled seafood, coconut ice cream
Round 4 of 9
Nightlife
Phuket wins, clearly
Phuket has Bangla Road; Koh Samui has Chaweng. Phuket is the bigger night out by a clear margin.
Patong and Bangla Road
Patong is Phuket's party centre, a long beach backed by the neon strip of Bangla Road with hundreds of bars, clubs and restaurants, all reachable on foot. It is loud, and the guide advises staying elsewhere and visiting for a night out if you want a quiet beach. Patong after midnight has a rougher atmosphere.
- Go-to spots
- Bangla Road, Patong
Chaweng, Ark Bar and a ferry to the Full Moon Party
Chaweng is Koh Samui's nightlife, a strip of restaurants and bars along the main beach that can be noisy close to the main road. Ark Bar Beach Resort is known for daily beach parties. The island's big night is next door: the Full Moon Party at Hat Rin on Koh Phangan, 30 minutes by ferry from 200 THB, once a month.
- Go-to spots
- Chaweng, Ark Bar, Hat Rin
Round 5 of 9
Which is cheaper, Phuket or Koh Samui?
Phuket wins, narrowly
Phuket is cheaper wherever the two guides differ, but the gap is narrow and local food costs the same.
| Typical cost | 🏝️ Phuket | 🥥 Koh Samui |
|---|---|---|
| Budget travel, per day | 1,000–1,800 THB | 1,200–2,000 THB |
| Mid-range, per day | 3,000–5,500 THB | 4,000–7,000 THB |
| Comfortable, per day | 8,000+ THB | 10,000+ THB |
| Hostel or budget guesthouse | 400–800 THB | 600–1,000 THB |
| Mid-range hotel or resort | 1,800–3,500 THB | 2,500–5,000 THB |
| Local food, markets, street stalls | 300–500 THB | 300–500 THB |
| Scooter rental, per day | 150–300 THB | 200–300 THB |
| Day trip: Phi Phi or Ang Thong, from | 1,200 THB | 1,800 THB |
Typical 2026 prices as listed in the Atlas guides to Phuket and Koh Samui, in Thai baht (THB). Neither guide quotes euro or dollar equivalents for these rows.
Bottom line: Phuket is cheaper in every row that differs, but only by a modest margin, and the two share the same local food prices. The Koh Samui guide calls the island slightly more expensive than Phuket, and its luxury end is where the money goes: villas such as the Four Seasons start from $800 a night, against $600 at Phuket's Trisara.
Round 6 of 9
Getting there and around
Phuket wins, narrowly
Phuket is the easier and cheaper island to fly into; both are best explored by scooter. Phuket wins on access.
A big island with a far-north airport
Phuket International (HKT) is in the far north of the island, 35 km from Patong and 45 km from Kata. A Grab to Kata costs 500-600 THB, a metered airport taxi 600-800 THB and the Smart Bus to Patong and Kata 100 THB. Around the island, scooters rent for 150-300 THB a day, Grab rides cost 100-400 THB, and tuk-tuks are unmetered, so agree the price first.
- Good to know
- No metro, rent a scooter or use Grab
One airline from Bangkok, and a ring road
Bangkok Airways is the only airline flying direct between Bangkok and Koh Samui, a one-hour flight at 1,500-4,000 THB, and the guide says that monopoly makes it significantly pricier than comparable routes. The alternative is a budget flight to Surat Thani and a ferry of 1.5 to 2 hours for about 300 THB, which costs a third as much but adds 3 to 4 hours. On the island, scooters are 200-300 THB a day and songthaews on the ring road 50-100 THB.
- Good to know
- No public bus, book Bangkok flights early
Round 7 of 9
When to go: Phuket and Koh Samui
Opposite seasons
The two islands are on opposite monsoon calendars. Pick the island by the month you can travel.
November to April
Phuket's dry season, from November to April, brings calm seas, strong diving visibility and reliable sunshine; December and January are the driest and busiest months. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings heavy rain and rough surf on the west-facing beaches, and hotel prices drop 30-60%. The Similan Islands are open only from November to April.
- Best months
- November to April
December to April, and May to September too
Koh Samui faces the Gulf of Thailand, so its worst weather is October and November, when the northeast monsoon makes the east-facing beaches rough and Ang Thong Marine Park closes. December to April is ideal, and May to September is warm and mostly dry. Samui is often calm in May and June, when the monsoon is drenching Phuket.
- Best months
- December to April
Round 8 of 9
Which is safer for tourists, Phuket or Koh Samui?
Koh Samui wins, narrowly
Both are low risk and violent crime against tourists is rare. The Atlas guides score Koh Samui 8.5 out of 10 and Phuket 8.0.
Motorbikes, rip currents and scams
Motorbike accidents are the leading cause of tourist death and injury, and several tourists drown each year, typically on unpatrolled beaches or by ignoring red flags. The jet ski damage scam, where the owner demands 10,000-30,000 THB for damage that may already have been there, is the most financially damaging. Tourist police: 1155.
- Watch for
- Motorbikes, red flags, jet skis
The same risks, with fewer scams
The main risks are motorbike accidents and ocean conditions, with rip currents on east-facing beaches during the northeast monsoon in October and November. Scams are less prevalent than in Phuket but present: jet ski damage claims occur in Chaweng, and taxi drivers who take commissions from shops are common. Tourist police: 1155.
- Watch for
- Motorbikes, monsoon surf, jet skis
Round 9 of 9
Day trips
Different strengths
Phuket looks east and south to limestone seascapes; Koh Samui sits a short hop from three famous islands. Each has an excellent boat day.
🏝️ PhuketPhi Phi, Phang Nga Bay and the Similans
The Phi Phi Islands are 2 hours by speedboat from 1,200 THB, and Phang Nga Bay is 1.5 hours by road and boat from 1,400 THB, with the best experience being the sea kayaking through cave lagoons. The Similan Islands are 3 hours by speedboat from 3,500 THB and open November to April only. Krabi and Railay are 2 hours away by ferry or speedboat from 800 THB and better as a 2 to 3 night stay.
- Go-to trips
- Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay, Similans
🥥 Koh SamuiAng Thong, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan
Ang Thong Marine Park is 45 minutes by speedboat from 1,800 THB, with 42 protected islands and the Talay Nai saltwater lake, and is closed in October and November. Koh Tao is 1.5 hours by speedboat from 800 THB for the ferry return, and Koh Phangan 30 minutes by ferry from 200 THB. The Three Islands snorkel trip from 1,200 THB is the easy half-day.
- Go-to trips

Can you combine Phuket and Koh Samui in one trip?
Yes, and the opposite monsoons help, but five days on each island is the guides' own suggestion. The Atlas guides do not list flights between the islands, so check current options before you book.
Phuket: days 1 to 5
- Days 1 to 2
Kata, Karon and Nai Harn. Base in Kata or Karon, then a scooter or Grab to Nai Harn on a separate day. Leave Old Town for another day.
- Day 3
Phi Phi Islands. An early speedboat from Chalong or Ao Po pier reaches Maya Bay before the main flotilla of boats.
- Day 4
Old Town and the Big Buddha. Sino-Portuguese shophouses in the morning, the free 45-metre Big Buddha at sunset, or the Sunday Walking Street on Thalang Road in the evening.
- Day 5
Phang Nga Bay or diving. The sea kayaking tour through limestone caves and lagoons, or a diving day from Chalong.
Koh Samui: days 6 to 10
- Days 6 to 7
Bophut, Maenam and the Secret Beach. Base in Bophut or Maenam for character and value, scooter to the Secret Beach in the morning, then Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem.
- Day 8
Ang Thong Marine Park. A small-group speedboat of 8 to 12 people from Nathon or Mae Nam pier beats the large catamarans.
- Day 9
Waterfalls and the interior. Na Muang waterfalls and the coconut plantations by scooter, then the Friday Walking Street in Bophut's Fisherman's Village from 5pm if it is a Friday.
- Day 10
Koh Phangan or Koh Tao. Bottle Beach and Than Sadet waterfalls on Koh Phangan, or a day of snorkelling or diving on Koh Tao.
When to go: November to April works for Phuket, December to April for Koh Samui, and May to September for Koh Samui alone.

Or see both.
