Bahamas vs Dominican Republic

Which Caribbean beach trip wins for you in 2026?

Updated November 2026

Two Caribbean countries that North American travellers weigh against each other every winter. The Bahamas is about 700 islands, 45 minutes from Miami, and priced like a resort country. The Dominican Republic has the largest all-inclusive coast in the Caribbean and a colonial capital founded in 1496. We compared them across eight rounds using the Atlas guides to each country.

The short answer

The Dominican Republic wins narrowly, on value and history. Budgets run $50-90 a day against $150-220, and it adds a UNESCO colonial capital. The Bahamas wins on island-hopping and on the short flight from Miami. Beaches, food, weather and safety are close to ties.

What you're really choosing between

The Bahamas and the Dominican Republic both sell turquoise water, but one is a scatter of about 700 islands priced like a resort country, and the other is one large island with a mature all-inclusive coast and an older history.

🏝️ Bahamas

A decision tree of islands, 45 minutes from Miami

Nassau and Paradise Island are the mega-resort version most first-timers book; the Exumas, Eleuthera, Abaco and Andros are the quiet Out Islands. It is English-speaking and runs on the US dollar in every practical sense, but there is no real backpacker circuit and crime in parts of Nassau and Freeport is a specific concern.

🌴 Dominican Republic

The Caribbean's largest resort coast, on an older island

Punta Cana alone has more all-inclusive resort rooms than most Caribbean nations have hotel rooms, which is why flights are cheap and a resort week costs less than in the Bahamas. Beyond it are a UNESCO colonial capital, whale-watching Samaná and a cool mountain interior, but also long drives, poor road safety and a Level 2 advisory.

Round 1 of 8

Beaches

Different strengths

Pink sand and empty cays against long resort beaches. Different strengths, not a clear winner.

Pink Sands Beach on Harbour Island in the Bahamas, with pale pink sand and turquoise water🏝️ Bahamas
Winner

Pink sand, calm Cable Beach and the Exuma cays

Pink Sands Beach on Harbour Island is coloured by crushed coral and reddish foraminifera and runs almost the full length of the island's Atlantic side. The Exuma cays have some of the country's clearest water, and Cable Beach near Nassau is calm and shallow enough for children. Gold Rock Beach on Grand Bahama is wide and nearly empty at low tide.

Winner

Resort beaches from Bávaro to Isla Saona

Punta Cana has more all-inclusive resort rooms than most Caribbean nations have hotel rooms, and the Bávaro and Cap Cana beaches are the draw. Isla Saona, reached by boat from Bayahibe, is the most popular day trip and stops at a shallow sandbar known as the Natural Pool. Atlantic-facing beaches carry a real rip-current risk: obey the red flag.

Don't miss
Bávaro, Cap Cana, Isla Saona

Round 2 of 8

History and culture

Dominican Republic wins, clearly

The Dominican Republic has a UNESCO colonial capital and two UNESCO-listed music traditions. The Bahamas has Junkanoo and a pirate past, but less to see.

Runner-up

Junkanoo, Straw Market and a pirate-republic past

Nassau was a pirate base in the 1690s to 1718 before Woodes Rogers arrived as governor, and the country became independent in 1973. Junkanoo, the pre-dawn parade on Boxing Day and New Year's Day, is the cultural highlight, and the Queen's Staircase and the Straw Market are the main downtown sights. Fort Fincastle entry is about $5.

Winner

The oldest European city in the Americas

Santo Domingo, founded in 1496, has a Zona Colonial that UNESCO listed in 1990, with the first cathedral, fortress and hospital built by Europeans in the hemisphere. Calle Las Damas is the first paved street in the Americas, and merengue and bachata are both on UNESCO's intangible heritage list.

Round 3 of 8

Islands, nature and excursions

Bahamas wins, narrowly

One country is about 700 islands, the other is one big island with mountains and whales. The Bahamas wins on island-hopping; the Dominican Republic has more variety inland.

Winner

About 700 islands, swimming pigs and blue holes

The Bahamas has around 700 islands and cays, of which about 30 are inhabited. Big Major Cay's swimming pigs, the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, Dean's Blue Hole on Long Island and the Andros barrier reef give real island-hopping, usually by a 30 to 50 minute domestic flight.

Runner-up

Whales, mountains and kitesurfing on one island

Samaná Bay is one of the world's most reliable humpback whale nurseries, with the season running mid-January to late March. Pico Duarte, at 3,098 metres, is the highest peak in the Caribbean, and Cabarete has roughly 300 windy days a year. Isla Saona costs $59-80 a person as a day trip, and Scape Park (Hoyo Azul) about $129 for adults.

Go-to trips
Samaná whales, Pico Duarte, Cabarete

Round 4 of 8

Food and drink

Different strengths

Conch every way against a cheap plate of rice, beans and stew. Both eat well off the resort; the Dominican Republic does it for less.

Winner

Conch, three ways, and the Arawak Cay Fish Fry

Conch is the national dish: conch salad, cracked conch and conch fritters are the three essential orders, at $8-15 at the Fish Fry on Arawak Cay. Kalik and Sands are the two national beers (about $5-6), and rock lobster is in season from August to March at $20-35.

Must try

Winner

La bandera for $3-10 at a local comedor

La bandera dominicana (white rice, stewed red beans and stewed meat) is the everyday lunch at $3-10, and mangú with fried eggs, cheese and salami is the classic breakfast. Presidente beer is $2-4, and an off-resort dinner is $15-30. All-inclusive buffets are designed for volume, so leave the resort for at least one meal.

Must try
La bandera, mangú, Presidente

Round 5 of 8

Which is cheaper, the Bahamas or the Dominican Republic?

Dominican Republic wins, clearly

The Dominican Republic is cheaper in almost every row, with the widest gap on daily budgets, local meals and beer. Beach resort rooms cost about the same per night.

Which is cheaper, the Bahamas or the Dominican Republic?
Typical cost🏝️ Bahamas🌴 Dominican Republic

Mid-range, per day$250–400$150–250
Comfortable, per day$500+$300+

Local meal$10–20 (Fish Fry, local diner)$3–10 (comedor)
Local beer~$5–6 (Kalik, Sands)$2–4 (Presidente)
Mid-range restaurant dinner$25–40$15–30 (off-resort)
Beach or boat day outfrom ~$109 (Blue Lagoon Island)$59–80 (Isla Saona)
Taxes and fees10% VAT plus resort service chargeNot stated in the Atlas guide

US dollars, August 2026 research as listed in the Atlas guides to the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic. Prices drift, especially resort rates, so treat them as a planning baseline. The Bahamian dollar is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar; the Dominican peso trades around 58 to the dollar but floats.

Bottom line: the Dominican Republic is the cheaper country, mainly because you can eat and travel locally for a fraction of the Bahamian price, and because its all-inclusive rate covers meals. In the Bahamas, check the all-in total: 10% VAT and a resort service charge or fee are often added on top of the sticker price.

Round 6 of 8

Getting there and around

Bahamas wins, narrowly

Nassau is 45 minutes from Miami and everyone speaks English. The Dominican Republic has more flight origins, but longer road transfers.

🏝️ BahamasWinner

45 minutes from Miami, then flights between islands

Nassau (NAS) is roughly 45 minutes from Miami and 3 to 3.5 hours from New York on nonstop routes. The airport taxi is a $32 flat fare for two passengers, a jitney bus ride is about $1.50, and Nassau to an Out Island is a 30 to 50 minute flight at $90-250 one way. Traffic drives on the left.

Good to know
Taxi $32 flat, flights $90-250, drive left
🌴 Dominican RepublicRunner-up

Direct flights from a dozen cities, long drives on the ground

Punta Cana (PUJ) is about 2.5 hours from Miami and has direct flights from dozens of US and Canadian cities and from Europe. On the ground, Punta Cana to Santo Domingo is 2.5 to 3 hours by road and to Samaná 3.5 to 4 hours, so a rental car, transfer or domestic flight matters. Complete the free E-Ticket form before check-in.

Round 7 of 8

When to go

Tie

Both are at their best from December to April and share the same hurricane season. Pick the season, not the country.

🏝️ BahamasWinner

December to April, with the riskiest weeks in August to October

December to April is dry at 24-28°C, with peak prices and crowds around US holidays. Late April and November are very good at 26-29°C with lower prices. Hurricane season runs June to November and is riskiest from mid-August to mid-October; Grand Bahama and Abaco took a direct hit from Hurricane Dorian in September 2019.

Best months
Dec-Apr, late Apr, Nov
🌴 Dominican RepublicWinner

December to April, with September the wettest month

December to April is the dry season at 25-29°C on the coast, with no hurricane risk and peak resort prices around Christmas. August to October is 28-32°C with the heaviest rain, September typically the wettest month, and the lowest resort prices. Samaná's whale season (mid-January to late March) is a reason to target the heart of the dry season.

Best months
Dec-Apr, whales Jan-Mar

Round 8 of 8

Which is safer for tourists?

Both Level 2

The US State Department rates both Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution. Resort areas are far calmer than the rest of each country.

🏝️ BahamasWinner

Nassau and Freeport streets, jet skis and rentals

The advisory cites armed robbery, burglary and sexual assault, concentrated in parts of Nassau and Freeport away from the tourist strips. Unlicensed jet ski operators are specifically flagged, as are vacation rentals without private security. Emergency number 911 (alternate line 919).

Watch for
Unlicensed jet skis, rentals, night walks
🌴 Dominican RepublicWinner

Road safety, phone snatching and rip currents

The advisory (dated 12 June 2025) cites robbery, homicide and sexual assault. Tourist zones like Punta Cana have a dedicated tourist police force (POLITUR) and resort security, but traffic deaths are among the highest in the hemisphere, mostly involving motorcycles. Common scams are the timeshare tout, fake airport concierges and motoconcho overcharging. Emergency number 911.

Watch for
Motorcycles, phone snatching, rip currents
