Brazil’s Ministry of Health announced that travellers entering Amazonas, Acre, Amapá, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima and Tocantins must present an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis for yellow fever from 15 August 2026.
The requirement applies to all foreign nationals and returning Brazilian residents. Certificates are valid only if the vaccination was administered at least 10 days prior to arrival.
The policy responds to a recent uptick in sylvatic yellow fever cases reported in remote jungle communities during early 2026.
What this means for you
Obtain the single-dose yellow fever vaccine at least 10 days before your Amazon itinerary and carry the stamped certificate. Many travel clinics in Europe and North America issue WHO-compliant documents on the spot.
Combine the vaccine appointment with routine travel health checks for malaria prophylaxis and typhoid, both recommended for the region. Keep digital scans of the certificate on your phone as backup.
Cruise passengers disembarking in Manaus or Belém should confirm with their operator that shore-excursion providers accept the new documentation rules.
