Canada Extends NEXUS Processing Time Waiver for US Citizens to 2027

Canada Border Services Agency announced it will extend the temporary NEXUS interview waiver for US citizens renewing memberships through 31 December 2027. The measure was first introduced in 2024 to clear pandemic-era backlogs.

Renewing members simply upload documents online and receive a new five-year card by mail within 30 days. New applicants still require an interview but benefit from expanded enrolment centres opened in 2025.

NEXUS provides expedited clearance at 20 Canadian airports, all land border crossings and participating marine ports for pre-approved travellers.

What this means for you

US citizens whose NEXUS cards expire before end-2027 should renew online immediately to maintain uninterrupted access. Keep digital and printed copies of approval notices while waiting for new cards.

Plan land-border crossings during off-peak hours even with NEXUS, as occasional random inspections still occur. The program pairs well with Global Entry for seamless US re-entry.

Families travelling with children under 18 can add them to applications at no extra cost during this waiver period.
