Peru’s Ministry of Culture confirmed that Machu Picchu will return to its full daily capacity of 5,600 visitors from 1 July 2026 after two years of reduced access for restoration. Morning, afternoon and evening circuits will each accommodate roughly 1,867 guests.
Tickets must still be purchased at least one day in advance through the official government portal. Same-day sales remain unavailable to protect the site’s fragile infrastructure.
The reopening aligns with the completion of new sustainable trail surfaces and an upgraded shuttle-bus fleet designed to reduce emissions.
What this means for you
Secure tickets online immediately for July and August slots, as they historically sell out within hours of release. Choose the afternoon circuit (after 10:00) to avoid the largest morning crowds.
Combine the visit with a two-night stay in Aguas Calientes rather than a rushed day trip from Cusco. Altitude-acclimatisation in Cusco for at least 48 hours beforehand reduces risk of altitude sickness.
Book PeruRail or Inca Rail tickets in tandem with Machu Picchu entries to guarantee coordinated arrival times.
