Brazil's Ministry of Health published new yellow fever requirements on May 25 mandating boosters for travelers entering nine Amazon states from July 1 2026. The policy covers Amazonas, Pará, Acre, Rondônia, Roraima, Amapá, Tocantins, Mato Grosso and Maranhão. International and domestic passengers must show valid certificates.

Boosters are required 10 years after the initial dose. Approved vaccines include Stamaril and YF-VAX. Children under two and adults over 60 receive medical exemptions with doctor documentation.

Airlines will check certificates at check-in counters in Manaus, Belém and Porto Velho. Non-compliant passengers face denied boarding and possible fines of 500 reais. Cruise lines docking at Amazon river ports must also verify passenger status.

WHO recommends the vaccine for all travelers to endemic zones. Brazil recorded 42 yellow fever cases in 2025 mostly among unvaccinated rural workers. The new rule aligns with PAHO guidelines issued in March.

Travel clinics in major Brazilian cities offer same-day boosters for 180 reais. International visitors should obtain the shot at least 10 days before arrival. Digital certificates uploaded to the Conecte SUS app speed verification.

Ecotourism operators in the Amazon report minimal booking impact so far. Several jungle lodges now include vaccination assistance in their packages. Officials plan mobile clinics at airports starting June 15.

The requirement will be reviewed annually based on case data. Travelers heading to Iguaçu Falls or Rio de Janeiro remain exempt. Full state list and approved clinics appear on the ministry website from June 1.
