US Issues Level 3 Advisory for Tourist Areas in Jamaica

The US State Department raised its travel advisory for Jamaica to Level 3 on July 2 citing violent crime in Montego Bay and Kingston. The advisory covers the parishes of St James, Kingston and St Andrew. It does not restrict travel to all-inclusive resorts on the north coast.

Home Travel News Safety US Issues Level 3 Advisory for Tourist Areas in Jamaica

The US State Department elevated Jamaica to Level 3 – Reconsider Travel – on July 2 because of violent crime. The advisory specifically highlights risks in Montego Bay, Kingston and Spanish Town. Crime rates in tourist zones rose 19 percent in the first half of 2026 compared with 2025.

American citizens are advised to avoid walking outside resort compounds after dark and to use only hotel-arranged transportation. The advisory remains in effect until further notice and will be reviewed on August 15.

Jamaica’s Ministry of Tourism reported 1.8 million US visitors in 2025 and expects the advisory to have limited impact on all-inclusive bookings. Sandals and Beaches resorts have increased private security patrols at their properties.

Canada and the UK have not changed their advisories, which remain at standard caution levels. Cruise lines including Royal Caribbean continue normal port calls in Ocho Rios and Falmouth.

What this means for you

Review your travel insurance policy for trip cancellation coverage before departure. Book excursions only through resort concierges and avoid independent taxi drivers. Carry a copy of your passport and hotel confirmation at all times.

Monitor the State Department website for updates on August 15. Consider travel to Antigua or Barbados if flexibility exists in your itinerary.

The advisory does not affect cruise passengers who remain within port areas but strongly discourages independent exploration beyond resort perimeters.
