United Airlines confirmed the new daily Newark Liberty International to Cape Town route on June 23 with service launching November 15 2026. The flight will use Boeing 787-9 aircraft offering 282 seats in three classes. Introductory fares start at 685 US dollars one way for economy travel in November.

The airline cited a 31 percent increase in bookings to South Africa from the New York area over the past year. Cape Town International Airport will receive the flights on a year-round schedule. Codeshare partners Lufthansa and Air Canada will offer connections from Europe and Canada.

Background indicates United previously served Johannesburg seasonally from Newark. Demand for Cape Town has risen sharply due to its film industry and wine tourism. Competitors Delta and American have not announced similar direct services.

The route fills a gap left after British Airways reduced frequencies on its London-Cape Town service. South African tourism officials welcomed the addition as a boost to off-peak visitation. Load factors on existing US-Africa routes averaged 84 percent in 2025.

What this means for you

Book early for November departures to secure the lowest fares before prices rise. Select premium economy for lie-flat seats on the 14-hour journey. Monitor United's app for schedule changes during the initial months.

Allow extra time for US exit immigration when connecting from domestic flights. Pack layers for Cape Town's variable spring weather upon arrival.

United plans to evaluate a second daily frequency by 2028 based on demand. Additional African routes may follow if this service succeeds.
