Chile's National Forestry Corporation opened the trail after three years of construction. The extension starts at the French Valley and ends at a new glacier overlook platform. Daily hiker capacity is capped at 120 to protect the fragile ecosystem.
Permits cost US$45 and must be purchased through the official CONAF website. The route features new suspension bridges and rest shelters built to seismic standards. Park rangers will patrol the area daily starting in November.
The project was funded by a public-private partnership with tourism operators. It responds to overcrowding on the classic W circuit that saw 180,000 visitors in 2025. Similar extensions are planned for other Patagonian parks by 2028.
What this means for you
Reserve permits immediately for December 2026 to March 2027 slots as they sell out fast. Hire local guides familiar with the new terrain and weather patterns. Pack microspikes for potential ice on the glacier section.
Book refugio stays in advance rather than camping to reduce pack weight. Check park alerts for sudden closures due to high winds common in the area.
Future expansions may include multi-day kayak options on nearby lakes.
