Costa Rica opened 12 new eco-lodges in Monteverde and Arenal cloud forests on June 15 2026. All properties achieved Level 5 carbon-neutral certification from the Costa Rican Tourism Board. The lodges feature solar power rainwater harvesting and zero single-use plastics.
Room rates start at 185 dollars per night including guided night hikes and organic meals. Construction preserved 340 hectares of primary forest with elevated walkways minimizing ground impact. The network connects via a new electric shuttle service between lodges.
The initiative fulfills Costa Rica's pledge to reach 1.5 million sustainable tourism visitors annually by 2027. Previous expansions in 2024 focused on Pacific beach properties while this phase targets highland biodiversity hotspots.
Local communities own 60 percent of the lodges with revenue sharing agreements supporting reforestation. Early occupancy reached 78 percent in the first week of operation.

Future phases will add zip-line canopy routes linking additional lodges by late 2027.
