Department of Conservation officials confirmed on June 8 2026 that five new trails join the Great Walks network in October. The additions cover remote sections of the Paparoa Track, Te Araroa Trail and Hump Ridge Track. Daily hiker numbers will be capped to protect fragile ecosystems.

Permits go on sale July 1 through the official booking platform with prices from NZ$80 per night. International visitors receive the same allocation as domestic hikers for the first time. Ranger-led interpretation programmes will be offered on two of the new routes.

New Zealand created the Great Walks brand in 1994 to manage high-demand trails. The network previously comprised ten routes attracting over 150,000 overnight visitors annually. Expansion responds to post-pandemic demand and regional economic development goals.

Local iwi have co-designed the new trails with emphasis on cultural storytelling. Infrastructure upgrades include new huts, signage and emergency shelters. Tourism New Zealand will promote the routes in key markets from August onward.

What this means for you

Log into the Department of Conservation website on July 1 at 09:00 NZ time to secure permits. Have flexible dates ready as popular slots will book within hours. Download the latest trail maps and weather apps before setting out.

Book hut accommodation in advance and carry a personal locator beacon on remote sections. Check vaccination and insurance requirements for multi-day wilderness travel. Consider guided options on the new routes if you prefer supported hiking.

Additional trails may open in 2027 if visitor management proves successful. Early booking and adherence to leave-no-trace principles will help preserve access for future seasons.
