India Expands e-Visa to Five Additional African Nations in August

India will extend its e-Visa program to Ethiopia, Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia from August 1 2026. The policy allows 60-day multiple-entry stays for a $25 fee with online processing in three to five days. The change is expected to increase African visitor numbers by 30 percent and strengthen bilateral tourism ties.

India's Ministry of Home Affairs announced the expansion on June 10 2026. Citizens of Ethiopia, Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia can now apply online for multiple-entry e-Visas valid for 60 days. Processing takes three to five business days at a cost of $25.

Applicants must upload a passport scan and recent photo through the official portal. The move follows successful earlier rollouts to other African states in 2025. Government data projects a sharp rise in arrivals from the continent.

India has steadily liberalized visa rules since 2023 to recover tourism numbers. Trade and cultural agreements with African nations provided the foundation for this latest step. Similar expansions previously boosted arrivals from Europe and Southeast Asia.

Officials aim to reach ten million total visitors by 2027 through targeted market growth. Economic partnerships and direct flight increases support the visa changes. Tourism boards in the five new countries are already promoting the update.

What this means for you

Submit applications at least two weeks before departure via indiaevisa.gov.in and avoid unofficial agents. Carry printed approval and passport copies at immigration. Verify exact entry rules for your nationality on the same site before booking.

Secure travel insurance covering the full 60-day allowance and confirm onward tickets. Monitor the portal for any last-minute document requests. Book popular destinations such as Rajasthan early as demand is forecast to rise quickly.

Further African countries are likely to be added in 2027 as India continues easing entry rules. Travellers should watch for new direct flight announcements that will complement the visa access.
