Department of Conservation opened five new huts on June 1 along the Milford Track and Routeburn Track in Fiordland National Park. The structures include composting toilets, rainwater collection and 20 kW solar arrays. Each hut accommodates 40 hikers with separate guide quarters.

Bookings opened immediately through the Great Walks reservation system. Peak season occupancy reached 98 percent within the first week. Construction cost NZD 12 million and took 18 months to complete.

Background shows the original huts dated from the 1980s and could no longer meet demand or environmental standards. Visitor numbers on the Milford Track hit 60,000 in the 2025 season. The new facilities reduce pressure on older infrastructure and improve waste management.

Guided tour operators received priority allocation for 30 percent of beds. Independent walkers can book the remaining spaces up to six months in advance.

What this means for you

Reserve huts immediately for December 2026 through March 2027 as availability is limited. Choose the new huts for modern amenities and lower environmental impact. Pack lightweight sleeping bags since bunks include mattresses only.

Book guided tours if you prefer luggage transfers and meals included. Check weather forecasts closely as Fiordland receives heavy rain even in summer.

Additional huts are planned for the Kepler Track next year, further expanding access to remote areas.
