Prime Minister Christopher Luxon opened the Fiordland Sustainable Visitor Hub on 25 May 2026 after three years of construction. The NZ$48 million project features solar power, rainwater harvesting and composting toilets. Daily capacity reaches 1,200 visitors with timed entry slots to protect the environment.

The centre includes interactive exhibits on Maori history, glacial geology and conservation efforts. Electric shuttle buses transport visitors from the hub to Milford Sound cruise terminals. Parking for 400 vehicles includes 80 EV charging points.

Entry fees of NZ$25 per adult fund ongoing maintenance and predator control programmes. Children under 15 enter free. Advance booking is required during peak season from December to February.

Tourism operators report improved crowd management and reduced environmental impact compared with previous facilities. The hub incorporates native plant landscaping and uses recycled materials throughout. It sets a benchmark for sustainable infrastructure in other national parks.

International visitors from Australia, China and the United States have already booked guided tours through the new facility. The Department of Conservation plans similar upgrades at Tongariro and Abel Tasman parks. Real-time visitor flow data helps prevent overcrowding on popular tracks.

Local iwi groups participated in design consultations to ensure cultural representation. Educational programmes for schools will begin in July 2026. The project supports New Zealand's goal of carbon-neutral tourism by 2030.

Travellers should reserve timed slots online before arriving at the park. The hub provides weather updates and safety briefings for day hikes. This development enhances the visitor experience while preserving Fiordland's pristine wilderness.
