The Port of Tromso opened its new Arctic Cruise Terminal on May 17 2026 after two years of construction. The 18,000 square meter facility can accommodate two large vessels simultaneously with a combined passenger capacity of 6,000. Electric shore power connections reduce emissions by an estimated 85 percent compared with previous operations.

Norwegian authorities invested 320 million NOK in the project including a new 400-meter quay and dedicated immigration hall. The terminal features heated walkways and real-time passenger information displays in eight languages. Local buses and electric taxis are integrated directly into the arrivals area.

Cruise lines including Hurtigruten and Princess Cruises have scheduled 142 port calls between May and September 2026. Average passenger spend in Tromso is projected at 95 euros per person based on 2025 data. Local operators have added 40 new shore excursions focused on northern lights viewing and Sami cultural experiences.

The terminal operates 24 hours during peak season with security screening completed within 25 minutes of disembarkation. Passengers requiring special assistance receive priority lanes and dedicated staff. The facility meets all EU accessibility standards for wheelchair users and families with strollers.

Tromso airport added three daily flights from Oslo and two from London Gatwick to accommodate cruise passengers extending their stays. Hotel occupancy in the city reached 94 percent during the first week of terminal operations. Municipal leaders expect the new infrastructure to support 250,000 cruise visitors annually by 2028.

Environmental groups welcomed the shore power mandate but called for stricter limits on vessel size. The port authority will publish monthly emissions reports starting in June. Future expansion plans include a second terminal scheduled for completion in 2029.

Travelers should check their cruise line's arrival time against published schedules as berthing priority favors ships using shore power. Independent visitors can reach the city center by electric bus in 12 minutes. The terminal offers free Wi-Fi and charging stations throughout the complex.
