Sal

The flattest island in the archipelago, named after the salt that once drove its economy. Today Sal is the Cabo Verde most visitors see: a long beach at Santa Maria, a fishing pier that still works, a salt lake you can float in, and an airport that connects the archipelago to Europe.

Quick answer: Sal is Cabo Verde's main beach and wind-sports island. Base yourself in Santa Maria, register online on EASE and pay the 3,400 CVE airport security fee at least 5 days before you fly, swim only on lifeguarded beaches, and add one day for the salt crater, Shark Bay and the Blue Eye.

Ch. 01 The Honest Overview

The island that carries Cabo Verde's tourism

Sal covers 216 km², is the flattest island in the archipelago and has about 38,000 residents, according to capeverde.com. Its name means salt, and for a long time salt mining was the economy; now it is used almost entirely for local needs and for tourism. The Cabo Verde National Statistics Institute says Sal accounted for 59% of tourist overnight stays in 2024, ahead of Boa Vista at 36.6% (reported by Lusa in December 2025).

The same report says the average tourist stay was 8.7 days and 87.1% of visitors travelled on package tours, which matches what you see on the ground: large all-inclusive resorts around Santa Maria, a short transfer from the airport. Independent travel is easy too, but Sal is a beach, wind and sun island first. For music, hiking and volcano landscapes you will want other islands, covered in the Cabo Verde guide.

The honest complications

Sal is dry and treeless, and the sea is the main attraction, which is also where the main danger lies: Canada says several drownings occur every year, especially in Praia and on Sal. The UK FCDO names Sal for pickpocketing, bag snatching and muggings, and Canada's advisory (a high degree of caution) names it among the islands with higher crime levels.

Entry paperwork is the other trap. Everyone must complete the online EASE pre-registration and pay the airport security fee at least 5 days before arrival. From 1 July 2026 the UK FCDO says you pay double the fee at the border if you have not pre-registered. Hostelworld also notes that Santa Maria is more expensive and more touristy than the rest of Cabo Verde.

Ch. 02 The Lay of the Land

Six places that matter on Sal

Almost everything a visitor needs sits in the south, around Santa Maria, with the airport and the island capital in the middle and the salt crater on the east coast. The island is small enough that you choose a base for the beach and make the rest day trips.

Santa Maria Resort town · Beach · Best base

Once a small fishing village, Santa Maria has developed rapidly over the last 20 years, according to capeverde.com. Its beach is 7 km long and up to 200 m wide, the town has pastel-coloured houses, small restaurants and shops, and its landmark is the old weigh-house on the harbour quay, where salt used to be weighed and where souvenir shops now operate. Hostelworld recommends staying in the town centre for guesthouses, restaurants and the pier.

Kite Beach (Costa da Fragata) Kitesurfing · Windy · Near Santa Maria

Hostelworld describes Kite Beach as a windy beach east of town with kitesurf schools, and cape-verde-islands-cabo-verde.com calls the kite beach at Costa de Fragata the best spot for kitesurfing, just north-east of Santa Maria and a 30 to 45 minute walk along the east coast. Stay near it if kitesurfing is the reason you came.

Ponta Preta Wave riding · West of town

Hostelworld describes Ponta Preta as a famous wave spot west of Santa Maria, popular with kitesurfers and windsurfers. Project Biodiversity lists Ponta Preta Beach inside the Ponta do Sinó nature reserve (5,720 hectares of dunes, salt flats, lagoons and beaches) at the southern tip of the island, so stay on marked paths and away from turtle nests.

Espargos Island capital · Practical · Near the airport

capeverde.com calls Espargos, with about 19,000 inhabitants, still typically Cabo Verdean and far from package tourism. It has no sights, but it has banks, the main post office, a health centre, shops, some accommodation, restaurants and bars. Hostelworld notes it is cheaper than Santa Maria.

Palmeira Harbour town · Boat trips

A small harbour town a few kilometres west of Espargos and the main port of the island, with some nice restaurants and bars according to capeverde.com. Snorkelling boat trips run from Palmeira as well as from Santa Maria.

Pedra de Lume East coast · Salt crater · Fishing village

The east-coast village around the old salt works inside the crater of a low volcano. It is a day-trip stop rather than a place to stay; see the island tour chapter below.

First time on Sal? Stay in or next to Santa Maria for the beach, restaurants and the pier, and treat Espargos, Palmeira and Pedra de Lume as places you visit by taxi or tour, not as bases.
Ch. 03 Where to Stay

Beach resorts, mostly all-inclusive

capeverde.com says almost all of Sal's hotels are in or around Santa Maria, strung along the white sand at the southern tip; most are large beach resorts run on an all-inclusive basis, and many are close enough to walk into town in the evening. We list only hotels we could confirm on official hotel sites or a second source, and give no prices, because rates change by date.

Riu Palace Santa Maria is on the beach and runs 24-hour all-inclusive; the hotel's own site describes it as ideal for families, with the RIU Land kids' club, a Splash Water World water park and Japanese, Italian and fusion restaurants, plus an adults-only room with a private pool. capeverde.com lists Riu Funana (5-star, all-inclusive, families) among its top picks as well.

For adults only, Meliá Llana Beach Resort & Spa is a 5-star, adults-only, all-inclusive resort listed by capeverde.com; Meliá's own pages give different minimum ages, so confirm the age rule before booking. ROBINSON Cabo Verde is an adults-only (minimum age 18) all-inclusive club directly on the beach at Santa Maria, with windsurfing, kitesurfing and sailing; its own page lists Santa Maria city centre at about 2 km and the airport at about 17 km (about 15 minutes, transfer times can vary). capeverde.com rates it 4-star.

If you prefer a guesthouse, Hostelworld suggests the town centre, close to restaurants and the pier.

Ch. 04 Food & Drink

Fresh fish, cachupa and grogue

The cooking on Cabo Verde is hearty, and on Sal the fish is the point: capeverde.co.uk lists tuna, wahoo, bica and lobster as the freshly caught seafood. Prices were not confirmed from an official source, so none are given here.

Cachupa National dish · Any time of day

capeverde.com describes cachupa as the national dish: a stew of mashed maize with onions, green bananas, manioc, sweet potatoes, squash and more, and with sausage, beef, pork or fish it becomes cachupa rica. Cape Verdeans eat it at almost any time of day. The same site notes that small restaurants serving excellent cachupa or feijoada often cannot be recognised from outside, so ask for a recommendation.

Seafood on the beachfront Barracuda · Chez Pastis

Barracuda is a beachfront Santa Maria restaurant that capeverde.co.uk recommends for fish and that Accidental Travel Writer lists for grilled lobster, tuna steak and seafood platters. Chez Pastis is a tiny open-air restaurant with about 16 seats, according to capeverde.co.uk and Holiday Hypermarket; capeverde.co.uk advises booking in advance.

Grogue Sugar-cane spirit · Pontche

Grogue is the classic local spirit, and pontche mixes it with sugar-cane molasses, citrus and cloves, according to capeverde.com.

Watch the pier at the right time. At the old quay in Santa Maria the fishermen bring in and gut their catch (capeverde.com), and Project Biodiversity says local vendors sell fresh seafood there. Hostelworld suggests the pier as part of staying in the town centre.
Ch. 05 Things to Do

Beach, wind, turtles and a salt lake

Sal splits into two kinds of day: time around Santa Maria, which is the beach, the pier and water sports, and one longer day around the island. The second is in the island tour chapter.

The beach and the pier

Santa Maria's beach is 7 km long, which capeverde.com says seems to offer the best conditions for a classic beach holiday. Swim at lifeguarded sections and obey the flags: the UK FCDO says red means do not enter the water, yellow means you can walk in the water but not swim, and green means it is safe to swim. Walk to the Santa Maria pier to see the weigh-house, the souvenir shops and the fishermen at work.

Kitesurfing, windsurfing and surfing

capeverde.com says Sal has become popular for windsurfing, wave surfing and kitesurfing. Hostelworld places Kite Beach and Ponta Preta near Santa Maria and says they attract riders from around the world especially from November to May. capeverde.com gives the wind season, the Tempo das Brisas, as October to mid-July. ROBINSON rates the wind at Beaufort 4 to 7 on its Sal club page.

Turtles

Cabo Verde has the third largest loggerhead nesting population in the world, according to capeverde.com, and Sal is one of the main islands. Project Biodiversity, a Cabo Verdean conservation NGO based on Sal, says guided nesting observation for 2026 ran from 1 July until the end of September, and that it does not recommend observing nesting adults in October. Choose government-certified guides, use no lights or flash and never touch turtles. Right now (end of October) the better option is the hatchery: Project Biodiversity says that from late August until the end of November you can watch free public nest excavations, with a presentation at 16:30 every day once hatching is in full swing. Do not join any excursion that promises to release baby turtles.

Whales and snorkelling

Project Biodiversity says humpback whales come to Cabo Verde to breed between February and May; whale-watching tours are not as developed on Sal as on Boa Vista, but sailing boats and diving trips often meet them in season. capeverde.com says boat trips for snorkelling run from Santa Maria and Palmeira.

Ch. 06 Itinerary

One, two or three days on Sal

Hostelworld suggests three to four nights in Santa Maria. These plans use only the places confirmed in this guide and leave transfer times to your driver or tour operator.

  1. Morning

Santa Maria pier. The weigh-house, the souvenir shops and the fishermen landing their catch.

  2. Midday

Beach time at a lifeguarded section. Check the flag colour before you swim.

  3. Evening

Dinner at Barracuda or Chez Pastis. Book Chez Pastis ahead; it has about 16 seats.

Ch. 07 Getting There & Around

Fly into SID, then taxi to Santa Maria

Sal's airport, Amílcar Cabral International Airport (SID), is the country's international gateway. The airport operator's site lists routes to Budapest, Bristol, Nantes, Manchester, Milan, Bordeaux and Toulouse and notes an easyJet London to Sal service, and Cabo Verde Airlines flies between the islands.

Before you fly. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after arrival (UK FCDO). The FCDO says UK passport holders can enter for up to 30 days without a visa. Everyone must fill in the traveller entry form and pay the airport security fee (TSA) of 3,400 CVE at ease.gov.cv at least 5 days before arrival; children under 2 are exempt (capeverde.com). From 1 July 2026 the FCDO says missing pre-registration means paying double at border control. From 1 January 2026, nationals of 96 countries need a visa before arrival, so check the EASE notice for your passport. If you booked a package, ask whether the TSA is already included.

From the airport. The airport operator says formal taxis are available on arrival at most airports and fares vary by island, and suggests checking prices with the municipal chamber. Official taxis on Sal and Boa Vista are blue and yellow (UK FCDO, Canada). Canada advises using only officially marked taxis, confirming the driver's identity and plate, and not sharing a taxi with strangers. Informal Hiace minibuses run on all islands, with a minimum fare of about 100 CVE per trip according to the airport operator. Agree the fare before you start.

To other islands. capeverde.com says all domestic flights have been operated by Cabo Verde Airlines (CVsky) since March 2024, after BestFly became insolvent, with flights of roughly 20 to 50 minutes. Schedules are often released only 1 to 2 months ahead and last-minute changes are common, so reconfirm a day or two before. The Sal to Boa Vista ferry takes about 3 hours and Sal to São Vicente about 10 hours, and capeverde.com calls ferries outside São Vicente to Santo Antão rather unreliable.

Best time to visit

capeverde.com describes two seasons: the Tempo das Brisas (time of the winds) from October to mid-July, and the Tempo das chuvas from August to September, when there can be heavy tropical rain. It gives the coolest months as January and February (average 21°C) and says sea temperatures range from 22°C to 27°C through the year. Canada says the rainy season runs from mid-August to mid-October. For wind sports, Hostelworld points to November to May; humpback whales are present from February to May (Project Biodiversity).

Practical prep: the EU's free roaming does not apply in Cabo Verde, so an eSIM before landing avoids roaming charges.

Ch. 08 What It Costs

The numbers we could source

We could not confirm current hotel, restaurant or tour prices from official sources, so this chapter lists only published figures. The escudo is pegged to the euro at 1 euro = 110.265 CVE, according to capeverde.com, which cites the Central Bank of Cape Verde.

Official visitor average
9,014 CVE/day
  • Average daily spend of tourists in 2024, per the National Statistics Institute via Lusa
  • Average stay 8.7 days
  • 87.1% travelled on package tours
Entry fee
3,400 CVE
  • Airport security fee (TSA), paid online per traveller
  • Register on EASE at least 5 days before
  • Double at the border without pre-registration (UK FCDO, from 1 July 2026)
Local transport
100 CVE
  • Minimum Hiace minibus fare per trip, per the airport operator
  • Taxi fares vary by island; agree before you go
Cash and banks. capeverde.com says there are exchange desks at the international airports including Sal and that banks are open from 8am to 3pm. It also says to tip about 10% of the bill. Package holidays often include the TSA, so check before you pay.
Ch. 09 Staying Safe

Low crime, strong sea

Canada's advisory for Cabo Verde is "Exercise a high degree of caution" (last updated 26 May 2026) and names Sal among the islands with higher crime levels. The UK FCDO says the crime rate is generally low but includes pickpocketing, bag snatching, burglary and muggings, particularly in Praia and on Sal and Boa Vista. Sexual assaults are rare but have been reported. Leave valuables in a secure place such as the hotel safe, keep belongings in sight at bars and restaurants, and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

The sea is the bigger risk. Canada says strong currents and powerful waves make swimming dangerous in some places, with several drownings every year especially in Praia and on Sal; never swim alone and respect the areas reserved for swimming. The FCDO says to use beaches with a lifeguard on duty, that tides and currents are very strong and that waves can be unpredictable with a strong undertow. Red flag means do not enter the water.

Medical help is thin. Canada says emergency and ambulance services are very limited, Cabo Verde has no sea rescue or air evacuation services and medical evacuation between islands is limited, so take travel insurance that covers evacuation. Emergency numbers listed by capeverde.com: hospital and ambulance 130, fire 131, police 132. Canada also advises avoiding travelling alone at night in poorly lit or isolated areas.

Local manners. capeverde.com says nude bathing is not acceptable and that topless bathing is only tolerated at larger hotels with mostly European guests. See the Cabo Verde scams guide for common tourist traps.

Ch. 10 Island Tour

One day around the island

The three classic stops, the salt crater, Shark Bay and the Blue Eye, are usually done together on a half-day or full-day tour or by taxi. Operators generally list entrance fees as extra, so ask what is included and carry cash; we could not confirm an official fee for any of the three.

Pedra de Lume salt crater East coast · Float like the Dead Sea

On the east coast, the old salt works lie in the crater of a low volcano whose floor is below sea level, according to capeverde.com. Seawater seeps in and forms very salty pools where you can float weightlessly, like the Dead Sea, and there is a café with views over the site for those who prefer to stay dry. Project Biodiversity adds that salt production, mainly traded to Brazil, drove the settlement of Sal with Cabo Verdeans from other islands, with Pedra de Lume at its heart.

Shark Bay (Parda Reef) Juvenile lemon sharks · Shallow reef

Project Biodiversity says shark watching on Sal happens mainly at Parda Reef, commonly known as Shark Bay, where juvenile lemon sharks of about 50 cm to over 1 m shelter in the shallows. Rent water shoes for the rocky ground and sea urchins, never touch or feed the sharks, and decline any tour that feeds them.

Buracona and the Blue Eye North of Palmeira · Midday light

capeverde.com places the underwater caves and reefs, including the Olho Azul (Blue Eye), about 5 km to the north of Palmeira, and says that at midday the sunlight falls into the hole in the rock at an angle that makes the water look fascinatingly blue. Go around midday.

Boa Vista Another island · Ferry or flight

capeverde.com gives the Sal to Boa Vista ferry as about 3 hours and describes ferries on routes like this as unreliable, so a short domestic flight is often the safer choice. Per Lusa, Sal and Boa Vista together dominate tourist overnight stays in Cabo Verde.
