The vaccines travelers need to know

These are the vaccines that come up most often for international travel. Some are required for entry, others are just smart to have.

💉
Yellow Fever
Required for entry in 30+ countries

Mandatory for entry to many African and South American countries, and required if arriving from endemic regions. You need the official yellow card (ICV) as proof. One dose lasts a lifetime.

🏭
Malaria Prevention
Required in sub-Saharan Africa & beyond

Not a vaccine but a prophylactic medication. Essential for most of sub-Saharan Africa, parts of South/SE Asia, and Central America. Start before you travel.

Meningococcal
Mandatory for Saudi Arabia (Hajj/Umrah)

Legally required for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims visiting Saudi Arabia. Also recommended for travelers to the meningitis belt in sub-Saharan Africa.

🧔
Hepatitis A

Recommended for almost all international travel outside Western Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand. Transmitted through contaminated food and water.

💧
Typhoid

Strongly recommended if you're traveling to areas with poor sanitation or planning to eat street food. Available as injection or oral capsules.

🐕
Rabies

Pre-exposure vaccination recommended for travelers spending extended time outdoors, working with animals, or visiting areas where post-bite treatment is hard to access.

🌱
Japanese Encephalitis

Recommended for travelers spending a month or more in rural areas of Asia during transmission season, especially in rice-growing regions.

Routine Vaccines
Always check before travel

Make sure MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis), Polio, and seasonal flu vaccines are up to date before any international trip.
