Frontier Airlines is stepping into the void left by Spirit Airlines, unveiling four new routes this week aimed squarely at markets its defunct ultra-low-cost rival once dominated. Frontier on Tuesday announced it's adding four new routes, several of which were staples for its defunct rival, with new service to South Florida, Orlando, the Caribbean and Detroit — all cities where Spirit previously had a big presence. The rollout marks one of the clearest signs yet that surviving budget carriers are moving quickly to absorb the capacity and passenger demand Spirit left behind.
Frontier will add new Florida service from its home base at Denver International Airport (DEN), and it will also try to make up ground in Detroit, a major Midwest hub where Spirit had been the top challenger to Delta Air Lines, the No. 1 carrier in town. The four routes include Denver-Fort Lauderdale, Detroit-Los Angeles, Houston-San Juan and Kansas City-Orlando, some of which are entirely new while others revive service Frontier last flew several years ago — the carrier previously operated Denver-Fort Lauderdale in 2020 and flew Kansas City-Orlando as recently as 2022.
It isn't surprising to see Frontier move into a void left by its former top rival, since the two airlines had, until May, competed as America's two biggest ultra-low-cost carriers. Speaking in May after Spirit ceased operations, Frontier CEO James Dempsey said the Denver-based airline would be "disciplined" in adding routes or assets vacated by Spirit, noting Frontier had already overlapped with its former budget rival on about a third of its routes. That framing suggests more targeted additions are likely in the coming months rather than a wholesale takeover of Spirit's old network.
Spirit's collapse earlier this year left a substantial gap in the U.S. domestic low-cost market, particularly in leisure-heavy corridors to Florida, the Caribbean and secondary Midwest cities. Airlines including Frontier, along with other budget and legacy carriers, have been racing to capture displaced Spirit customers and slot allocations at congested airports like Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood and Detroit Metro. The speed of Frontier's response indicates the carrier sees a limited window before rivals or new entrants fill the same gaps.
Notably, Frontier's new route announcement came just hours after the carrier revealed plans to outfit its airplanes with fast on-board Wi-Fi from Starlink, a service the discounter has not previously offered on its jets. Pairing a network expansion with a product upgrade suggests Frontier is trying to position itself as a more attractive option for travelers who might otherwise have chosen Spirit purely on price, by adding amenities that could help retain those customers longer term.
