The US State Department raised its travel advisory for Haiti to Level 3 on July 12 citing widespread gang control in Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas. Kidnappings increased 41 percent compared with the same period in 2025. Armed groups block roads to the airport on multiple days each week.
Level 3 advises travellers to reconsider all but essential trips. The advisory covers the entire country including northern tourist sites such as Cap-Haïtien. No commercial flights operate from the US to Haiti at present.
Haiti has faced chronic instability since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. International airlines suspended service in 2024 after fuel shortages and runway damage.
What this means for you
Cancel any planned leisure travel to Haiti immediately and monitor the State Department website for updates. Dual nationals should register with the US Embassy in Port-au-Prince. Avoid all road travel outside secured hotel compounds.
Book refundable tickets only and purchase comprehensive travel insurance that includes medical evacuation. Reconsider cruise port calls in Labadee until the advisory drops.
