British Airways will operate daily nonstop flights between London Heathrow and Cape Town starting September 10. The route uses Boeing 787-9 aircraft with 216 seats in three classes. Introductory fares begin at 685 pounds roundtrip when booked before July 31.

The service departs Heathrow at 21:15 and arrives Cape Town at 08:40 the next day. Return flights leave Cape Town at 20:55 and arrive Heathrow at 07:20. Frequency increases to 10 weekly during December and January peak season.

South African tourism recorded 340000 UK visitors in 2025 despite the lack of direct flights. British Airways cited rising demand and improved bilateral aviation rights granted in May 2026. The airline previously operated the route until suspending it in 2024 due to fleet constraints.

Competitor Virgin Atlantic continues to serve Johannesburg daily from Heathrow but offers no Cape Town nonstop. Cape Town International Airport completed runway resurfacing in June 2026 to accommodate increased widebody traffic.

What this means for you

Book the new nonstop for September and October to avoid connections through Johannesburg or Doha. Select Club World seats early as premium cabin inventory is limited on the inaugural flights. Add the free stopover in London on return journeys using British Airways existing partner hotel rates.

Confirm yellow fever vaccination records if connecting through other African countries before boarding. Avoid checking bags through to Cape Town on codeshare partners until the new service stabilizes in October. Monitor British Airways app for schedule adjustments during the first month of operation.

The route strengthens Cape Town as a year-round European gateway and supports the city's 2027 tourism growth targets. Additional frequencies may be added for the 2026 holiday period based on load factors.
