Qantas Launches Daily Sydney to Johannesburg Nonstop From August

Qantas will operate daily nonstop flights between Sydney and Johannesburg beginning August 15. The 14-hour service uses Airbus A350-1000 aircraft with 300 seats. It replaces the current one-stop via Perth and cuts total travel time by four hours.

Qantas confirmed daily Sydney-Johannesburg nonstop flights starting August 15 2026 using Airbus A350-1000s. Economy fares begin at AUD 1,299 one-way while business class starts at AUD 4,899. The route operates in both directions with departures timed for morning arrivals in each city.

The airline projects 180,000 additional passengers annually on the corridor. Codeshare partners American Airlines and South African Airways will feed connecting traffic from North America and domestic African cities. Cargo capacity increases by 25 tons per flight for fresh produce exports.

The service revives a route suspended since 2020 due to pandemic restrictions. Johannesburg airport completed runway and terminal upgrades in May 2026 specifically to handle the increased wide-body traffic. Qantas has ordered two additional A350s for the route by 2027.

What this means for you

Book the inaugural August flights now as introductory fares sell out quickly. Select aisle seats in the forward economy cabin for easier access during the long 14-hour sector. Connect onward to Cape Town or Durban on the same ticket for seamless baggage transfer.

Business class passengers gain access to the new Qantas Johannesburg lounge opening July 20. Avoid booking same-day connections under two hours to account for potential customs delays at OR Tambo airport. Download the Qantas app for real-time gate and schedule alerts.

The nonstop option opens new safari and wine-region itineraries for Australian travelers exploring southern Africa.
