The Chilean government announced an extension of the remote worker visa program on June 1 2026 running through December 2027. The visa permits 12-month stays renewable once for applicants earning at least 2500 dollars monthly. Citizens of 40 countries including the US Canada and EU nations qualify.

Applications are processed entirely online with decisions issued within 15 business days. Over 18000 visas have been granted since the program launched in 2022. Popular destinations include Santiago Valparaiso and the Lake District.

The extension responds to strong demand and positive economic impact from digital nomads. Local tourism boards report a 28 percent increase in long-stay bookings in participating regions.

Similar programs exist in Portugal Spain and Costa Rica but Chile offers the lowest minimum income threshold among major destinations. Health insurance proof remains mandatory for approval.

What this means for you

Apply through the official Chilean immigration portal at least 30 days before planned arrival. Prepare proof of remote employment and sufficient funds for the full stay duration. Secure private health insurance valid in Chile before submitting.

Choose accommodations with reliable high-speed internet as co-working spaces remain limited outside Santiago. Register local address within 30 days of arrival to comply with residency rules.

Further extensions beyond 2027 are under discussion and may include a path to permanent residency for repeat applicants.
