The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on 28 May 2026 that visa fees for 12 ASEAN and Pacific nations will be waived starting 1 June. Eligible countries include Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Brunei, Singapore, Fiji and Papua New Guinea. The policy applies to single-entry tourist and short-term business visas.

The fee waiver removes the previous Β₯3,000 charge and simplifies the application process at Japanese embassies. Multiple-entry visas remain subject to standard fees. The change supports Japan's target of 40 million annual visitors by 2030.

Airlines operating routes from Southeast Asia have reported a 22 percent increase in advance bookings since the announcement. Popular destinations such as Tokyo, Kyoto and Okinawa expect higher arrivals during the summer holiday period. Visa processing times have been reduced to five working days for eligible applicants.

Japanese tourism boards have launched targeted marketing campaigns in Jakarta, Manila and Bangkok. Hotel chains offer special rates for ASEAN travellers including discounted ryokan stays. The policy excludes working holiday visas and long-term residence permits.

Applicants must still meet standard entry requirements including valid passports and proof of sufficient funds. Overstays will result in fines and future entry restrictions. The waiver will be evaluated after one year to measure its impact on visitor arrivals and spending.

Regional governments welcomed the move as a gesture of goodwill ahead of upcoming ASEAN-Japan summits. Travel agents note strong interest in cultural tours and food experiences among first-time visitors. Japan continues to relax entry procedures to recover international tourism fully.

Travellers should confirm eligibility on the Japanese embassy website for their country. Online applications remain available with digital payment options. The fee waiver improves accessibility for regional travellers exploring Japan's diverse destinations.
