US Raises Travel Advisory for Haiti to Level 4

The US State Department upgraded its Haiti travel advisory to Level 4 on 28 May citing ongoing gang violence and kidnapping risks. The change advises citizens not to travel to the country under any circumstances. Existing embassy support remains limited outside Port-au-Prince.

The State Department cited more than 1,200 kidnapping incidents recorded in the first four months of 2026 as the primary reason for the Level 4 designation. All US government personnel are already under ordered departure status.

Commercial flights to Port-au-Prince continue but with sharply reduced frequency. Airlines have been advised to review security protocols daily.

US citizens currently in Haiti are urged to depart on the first available flight. The embassy cannot provide routine consular services outside the capital due to security constraints.

Travel insurance policies may now exclude Haiti coverage following the advisory change. Several major insurers have already issued notices to policyholders.

Humanitarian workers and journalists are advised to register with the embassy and maintain satellite communication devices at all times.

The advisory will be reviewed monthly, with any downgrade dependent on sustained reductions in violent crime statistics.
