Indiaβs Ministry of Home Affairs announced the 10-year e-visa on 28 May, allowing eligible US and UK passport holders to enter for tourism, business or medical reasons up to 180 days per visit. The policy takes effect 1 June 2026 and applies to first-time and renewal applicants alike.
Applicants must still complete the online form and upload a digital photograph plus passport scan. Processing remains 72 hours for most cases, with an expedited 24-hour option available for an extra $30 fee.
Officials say the change responds to record post-pandemic travel demand and aims to boost tourism revenue, which reached $32 billion in 2025. Business groups in both countries welcomed the longer validity as a way to strengthen trade ties.
Travellers should note that the e-visa cannot be used for employment or long-term study. Overstays incur fines starting at $300 and possible future entry bans.
Border officers retain the right to deny entry even with a valid e-visa if travellers cannot show onward tickets or sufficient funds. The government plans to expand the scheme to Canada and Australia later this year.
Industry analysts predict a 15 percent rise in bookings to India from the US and UK markets through 2027 as repeat visitors take advantage of the simplified process.
