The US State Department raised its travel advisory for Mexico to Level 3 Reconsider Travel on 26 May 2026. The update covers Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas and Colima. Level 3 advises reconsidering non-essential travel due to crime risks.

Advisory language highlights recent kidnappings and roadblocks affecting highways between Acapulco and Mexico City. Cruise passengers docking in affected ports receive specific guidance to remain in secured zones. The advisory does not apply to Cancun or Los Cabos which remain at Level 2.

US citizens are urged to enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program before travel. Embassy staff recommend avoiding night driving and using only authorised taxis. Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly advised.

Mexican tourism authorities responded by increasing federal police presence along popular routes. Hotels in affected areas have added private security for guest transfers. The advisory will be reviewed again on 15 July.

Travel agents report 15 percent cancellation rates for bookings in the six states. Alternative destinations in Yucatán and Baja California Sur see corresponding booking increases. The State Department maintains a dedicated hotline for affected travellers.

Experts note that most tourist areas remain safe when standard precautions are followed. The advisory serves as a reminder to monitor local news and avoid remote areas. Future downgrades depend on sustained security improvements.
