India's Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed the five-year e-visa extension for United States citizens effective 1 July 2026. Applicants must still pay the standard $80 fee and complete online registration at least four days before travel. The change applies to tourism, business and medical categories.
Current one-year e-visas issued before July will remain valid until expiry but cannot be extended under the new rule. Officials expect the policy to increase US visitor numbers by 25 percent within the first year. Processing times stay at three to five business days for most applicants.
Travelers should note that the e-visa allows stays of up to 180 days per visit with no more than two entries in any calendar year. Overstays carry fines starting at 500 USD and possible future entry bans. The measure aligns with India's broader goal of simplifying entry for major source markets.
US citizens already holding valid ten-year tourist visas may continue using them until expiration. The e-visa option provides a cheaper alternative for those who prefer digital processing. Indian embassies in the US will stop accepting paper visa applications from American nationals after 30 June 2026.
Industry analysts predict the policy will benefit leisure travelers planning multiple trips to Rajasthan, Kerala and the Himalayas. Business visitors attending annual conferences in Mumbai and Bengaluru also gain convenience. The government will review the program after twelve months and may expand it to additional nationalities.
Applicants must upload recent photographs and passport scans meeting strict specifications. Any criminal record requires separate clearance from Indian authorities. The extension does not affect visa requirements for citizens of other countries.
