Japan's Cabinet approved the expanded visa exemption for Thai and Vietnamese passport holders on 24 May 2026. The new 90-day allowance applies to tourism and short business visits. Travelers must still complete online pre-registration through the Visit Japan Web system.
The change responds to strong recovery in Southeast Asian tourism and pressure from the tourism industry. Thailand and Vietnam already offer 90-day visa-free access to Japanese citizens. Japanese immigration will conduct enhanced screening for first-time visitors from both countries.
Thai and Vietnamese travelers planning stays longer than 90 days must apply for the appropriate visa in advance. Overstaying carries fines of 10,000 yen per day and possible deportation. The policy does not extend to other ASEAN nations at present.
Airlines flying between Japan and Southeast Asia have updated their check-in systems to reflect the new rules. Haneda and Narita airports have added dedicated lanes for the increased passenger flow. Japan National Tourism Organization will launch promotional campaigns in Bangkok and Hanoi.
Visitors should ensure their passports remain valid for at least six months beyond their planned departure date. The 90-day period cannot be extended once in Japan. Business travelers attending meetings may stay the full 90 days without additional permits.
Japan plans to evaluate the policy after six months and may consider further extensions. Similar agreements are under discussion with Malaysia and Indonesia. Travelers are reminded that customs declarations remain mandatory upon arrival.
