Visiting Perth in Western Australia is a memorable travel experience. Perth has magnificent beaches and spacious parks mixed with a fun city consisting of small bars, inviting restaurants, and colourful art.
Perth is the biggest city on the west coast of Australia, where locals and travellers revel in the beautiful sunsets or discover historic suburbs.
The last time I visited Perth in 2022, I was very impressed with the relaxed, beach lifestyle, mesmerising views and access to a variety of beaches. The city feels laidback, yet with plenty to do, from restaurants, bars, art exhibitions and markets to discover.
Here are some of my favourite things to do when visiting Perth, Australia.
Scarborough Beach
Scarborough beach is a beautiful and fairly quiet area, 30 minutes from the middle of Perth. It's easy to catch a bus or Uber here and enjoy the strip of ice-cream and coffee shops or settle in for some beach time.
There is a large skate park and open air, heated pool along the esplanade, and stunning views of the ocean with plenty of surf.
Fremantle
Catching the train to Fremantle is an easy way to take in the scenery as you head south of Perth. The train takes about 30 minutes to get to the small and historic port city of Western Australia.
When walking through the Fremantle streets you'll find book stores, cafes, record shops and boutiques between the maintained historic buildings from the 1800's.
Watching the sunset from Bathers Beach House is highly recommended, and is only a short walk from the centre of 'Freo'.
The Art Gallery of Western Australia
Visiting the Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA) is a fun thing to do while in Perth. There is a large number of first nations artists' works within the extensive collection at AGWA, as well as international artists and modern exhibitions. The experience of visiting AGWA is welcomig and easy, also provising a cafe and rooftop area.
Bobs Bar
Bobs Bar in Brookfield Place, is a welcome choice for a drink on a dry afternoon or evening. With indoor and outdoor seating, including a large rooftop area. Good prices and relaxed atmosphere.
Public House
Public House on Adelaide terrace is a bar/restaurant close to many hotels located in East Perth. Perfect for an easy drink after a long day of sightseeing, with good beer and casual, quality, pub style meals.
All Suites Perth
We stayed at All Suites Perth located at 12 Victoria Avenue, Perth. Our room was comfortable, clean, and modern, with an easy walk or bus to the main CBD of Perth. All Suites have great deals, and the area of inner-east is close to cafes and restaurants.
Rottnest Island
A visit to Perth without taking the short ferry out to Rottnest Island would be unthinkable. The blue green water, magical coves and white sand are definitely a must for any beach lover. Many visitors snorkel or surf on Rottnest island, with plenty of day trip options or longer stays. My favourite beach of the island is Little Salmon Bay.
The relaxed lifestyle is the real draw card of Perth. The city atmosphere mixed with the seaside way of life are unique, drawing travellers to the west coast to experience a quieter, less developed city, with stunning views of the Indian Ocean.
