Rates are indicative and sourced from open market data. Actual rates from your bank or transfer service will differ. Always check the mid-market rate at Wise before exchanging money.

ATMs beat airport exchanges every time

Airport currency desks routinely charge 8-15% above the mid-market rate. Use a local ATM on arrival instead โ€” you'll get near-interbank rates and pay a flat fee rather than a percentage.

Always pay in local currency

When a terminal or ATM asks if you want to pay in your home currency ("Dynamic Currency Conversion"), always decline. The rate they offer is typically 3-7% worse than your card's rate.

Wise and Revolut for multi-currency trips

Both cards give you the mid-market exchange rate with low or zero fees. Wise is better for holding multiple currencies; Revolut has better ATM allowances on paid plans. Either beats your high-street bank.

Set a rate alert before you travel

If you need a large amount for a long trip, set a rate alert on Wise or Google Finance. Exchanging even a week earlier when the rate moves in your favour can save you real money.

Some currencies can't be bought outside the country

Vietnamese Dong, Indonesian Rupiah, Indian Rupee, and others are restricted. Plan to use an ATM on arrival โ€” you'll get a far better rate than any exchange office at home.

City centre bureaux beat banks

If you need cash, independent exchange bureaux in city centres (away from tourist spots) often match or beat bank rates. Always check the rate before handing over your money.
