Indonesia will waive visa fees for citizens of France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Switzerland starting August 1. The exemption covers single-entry tourist visas valid for 30 days and applies at airports in Bali, Jakarta, Surabaya and Medan. Officials confirmed the change during a July 8 announcement in Jakarta.
Eligible travellers must still complete an online registration form at least 48 hours before arrival. The waiver excludes business and student visa categories. Multiple-entry options remain available for an unchanged fee of 35 USD.
Background shows Indonesia previously charged 35 USD for most European visitors. Neighbouring Malaysia introduced similar waivers in 2025 to boost post-pandemic arrivals. Tourism numbers from Europe reached 1.2 million in 2025 according to government data.
The policy aims to increase European arrivals by 25 percent before the end of 2026. It aligns with broader efforts to promote sustainable tourism in lesser-visited regions such as Sulawesi and Papua.
What this means for you
Book flights to Bali or Jakarta for travel after August 1 to avoid the 35 USD fee. Complete the online registration at the official immigration portal before departure. Carry proof of onward travel and sufficient funds as standard entry rules still apply.
Avoid using visa-on-arrival counters if eligible for the waiver to prevent unnecessary charges. Families should register each member separately even for children under 12.
Expect higher demand on popular routes from Paris and Frankfurt during August and September. Monitor the official immigration website for any last-minute adjustments to eligible nationalities.
