Brazil will waive tourist visa requirements for all Australian citizens starting August 15. Eligible travelers can enter for up to 90 days per visit without paying the previous $80 fee or submitting applications. The change applies at major airports including Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Manaus.

Officials confirmed the decision covers leisure, business meetings, and conferences but excludes work permits. Multiple entries remain allowed within any 180-day period. Australian passports must remain valid for six months beyond the planned departure date.

The move reverses a 2019 policy that required pre-approval for Australians. Brazil aims to boost tourism numbers after recording 6.2 million visitors in 2025. Similar waivers already exist for citizens of the United States, Canada, and Japan.

What this means for you

Book flights and Amazon lodges now for September departures to avoid peak holiday pricing. Carry printed proof of onward travel and sufficient funds as border officers may request them. Avoid overstaying the 90-day limit to prevent future entry bans.

Travelers planning longer stays should apply for a separate work or study visa at least 60 days in advance. Check the official Brazilian consulate site for any last-minute documentation updates before departure.
