Greece raised its official travel advisory for Rhodes to Level 3 on July 8 because of prolonged heatwaves. Daytime temperatures are expected to hit 43 degrees Celsius daily until August 15. All areas of the island including Lindos and Faliraki fall under the advisory.
The Greek meteorological service issued red alerts for wildfire risk in forested zones. Hospitals in Rhodes town reported a 40 percent rise in heat-related admissions last week. Tour operators have canceled several hiking excursions until temperatures drop.
Level 3 advisories recommend reconsidering non-essential travel. The previous Level 2 notice had been in place since June 20. Neighboring islands Crete and Kos remain at Level 2.
What this means for you
Reschedule trips to Rhodes after August 20 if possible to avoid peak heat. Book hotels with air conditioning and indoor pools rather than beachfront properties. Carry at least two liters of water per person and avoid outdoor activities between 1100 and 1600.
Travel insurance policies should be checked for heat-related medical coverage before departure. Elderly travelers and families with young children should consider alternative Greek destinations such as Corfu.
Local authorities plan to open additional cooling centers at ports and airports through mid-August.
