Mexican and Guatemalan officials opened the new Ciudad Hidalgo border crossing on 10 June 2026 after three years of construction. The modern facility includes dedicated tourist lanes, e-gates and 24-hour operation. Initial daily capacity is set at 8,000 vehicles and 12,000 pedestrians.
The crossing reduces pressure on the existing Talismán and Ciudad Cuauhtémoc posts which have faced chronic congestion. Tourism ministers from both countries expect increased cross-border travel to Palenque and Tikal archaeological sites.
Biometric systems linked to Interpol databases were installed to enhance security screening. The project received funding from the Central American Integration System.
Local businesses in Chiapas anticipate a 25 percent rise in Guatemalan day-trippers within the first year.
What this means for you
Use the new crossing if travelling between Antigua Guatemala and San Cristóbal de las Casas to avoid lengthy queues. Carry a valid passport and obtain a multiple-entry Mexican visa if needed before departure.
Book shuttle services in advance as private operators have already begun advertising direct transfers from the new facility. Avoid peak morning hours between 7 am and 9 am when commuter traffic peaks.
Keep copies of vehicle import permits if driving across the border for onward travel into Mexico.
