The European Union activated the ETIAS system for UK passport holders on June 1, 2026. Travelers must complete an online application and pay a 7 euro fee before boarding flights to the Schengen area. Approval is valid for three years or until passport expiry.
Most applications receive instant approval, but 4 percent require additional manual review within 96 hours. The system screens against security databases and tracks overstays. UK citizens made 12.4 million visits to Schengen countries in 2025.
ETIAS replaces the previous visa-free entry without prior authorization. Similar systems already operate for Canadian and Australian travelers. The EU expects to process 1.2 million UK applications in the first month.
What this means for you
Submit your ETIAS application at least one week before departure through the official EU portal. Keep a printed or digital copy of the approval on your phone. Double-check passport expiry dates because ETIAS validity cannot exceed the passport term.
Allow extra time at check-in for airlines to verify ETIAS status during the first six weeks. Reapply only if your passport is renewed or personal details change. Monitor email for any requests for additional information during processing.
The new requirement adds a small step but maintains visa-free travel for short visits to Europe.
