Mexico's National Institute of Migration confirmed Colombian citizens can stay 180 days visa-free starting June 1, 2026. The change doubles the previous 90-day allowance. Colombian arrivals reached 1.1 million in 2025, ranking fourth among international visitors.
Travelers must still present a valid passport, proof of onward travel and sufficient funds. Multiple entries are permitted within the 180-day period. Overstays incur fines of MXN 500 per day up to MXN 5,000.
The decision follows bilateral talks in April and mirrors similar extensions granted to Brazilian and Argentine nationals. Cancun and Mexico City airports have added dedicated immigration lanes for Colombian passports. Hotel occupancy in Quintana Roo rose 22 percent year-on-year.
Colombian tour operators report 35 percent growth in Mexico packages for summer 2026. Airlines including Aeromexico and Avianca have added 12 weekly frequencies between Bogota and Cancun. The policy expires December 2027 pending review.
Business travelers and digital nomads benefit most from the longer stay. Remote workers must still obtain temporary resident cards for stays beyond 180 days. Mexico recorded 45 million international visitors in 2025.
Immigration officers retain discretion to shorten stays based on individual circumstances. Travelers are advised to carry travel insurance covering the full intended stay. The extension strengthens Mexico's position as Latin America's top tourism destination.
