Home Travel News Safety Greece Issues New Wildfire Safety Alert for Aegean Islands

The Greek Civil Protection Ministry issued an elevated wildfire warning on May 24 for the Aegean islands. The alert remains in force until September 30 due to prolonged dry conditions. Rhodes, Kos, Santorini and Mykonos are under the highest category.

Firefighting resources have been increased with additional aircraft and ground crews. Hotels must now conduct monthly evacuation drills. Local authorities will send SMS alerts in multiple languages.

Travelers should download the official SafetyGreece app for real-time updates. Avoid hiking in forested areas during afternoon heat. Rental cars should carry at least five liters of water.

Insurance policies covering trip interruption due to natural disasters are recommended. Several major operators have added flexible rebooking options. Cruise lines have adjusted itineraries to include extra sea days if needed.

The warning follows last year's fires that forced evacuations on Rhodes. Tourism revenue recovered strongly but operators remain cautious. Early bookings for July and August remain solid.

Visitors should identify two exit routes from their accommodation. Keep passports and medications in a grab bag. Follow instructions from local police and fire services without delay.

Conditions will be reassessed weekly. Updates appear on the ministry website and embassy social channels. Travelers are urged to register with their home country's travel advisory service.
