China announced on 20 May 2026 that its 30-day visa-free entry policy for citizens of 74 countries will remain in force until the end of the year. The extension includes new additions of the United Kingdom and Canada to the existing roster that already covers much of Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.

Travellers from eligible countries can now enter China for tourism, business or transit without applying for a visa in advance, provided they stay no longer than 30 days per visit. The policy covers major gateways including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

Officials say the extension will help tourism numbers return to pre-pandemic levels by simplifying entry for short-term visitors. Airlines operating to China have reported increased bookings from Europe and North America since the announcement.

Visitors must still complete an online health declaration and carry proof of onward travel. Multiple entries are permitted as long as each stay does not exceed 30 days within any 180-day period.

The policy does not apply to work, study or long-term stays, which continue to require separate visas. Chinese embassies recommend checking the latest requirements on official government portals before departure.

Industry analysts expect the extension to increase visitor arrivals by at least 15 percent in the second half of 2026. Major hotel groups in Beijing and Shanghai have already launched promotional packages targeting the new markets.

China’s tourism authority plans further digital enhancements, including faster e-gates at airports, to handle the expected surge in arrivals through the summer and autumn seasons.
